GAMMA PHI BETA INTERNATIONAL SORORITY

NAMES GAMMA PHI BETA INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The International Council of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority has selected Brenda Dunn Rickert, Alpha Zeta, to serve as the Interim Executive Director of Gamma Phi Beta International Sorority effective January 26, 2004. She has served as Training & Development Chairwoman, Nominating Task Force Chairwoman, and Nominating Committee Chairwoman and presently holds the position of Strategic Plan Chairwoman and Crescent Values Coordinator.

Brenda brings 35 years experience in training, consulting, and facilitating to the position.

Brenda assumes her new responsibilities upon the departure of Karen Blackman who worked as Executive Director since 2001. Gamma Phi Beta wishes Karen much success in her new endeavors. International Council will begin the candidate search immediately.

Vicki Carlson Read, International President, said, "Brenda has a long and dedicated history with Gamma Phi Beta, including various volunteer positions. International Council is pleased Brenda accepted the interim position and looks forward to her continued contribution to the Sorority.”

Gamma Phi Beta International Sorority was founded in 1874 at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. Today, the Sorority has over 114 collegiate chapters across the United States and Canada and over 130,000 members worldwide. Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and Gamma Phi Beta Foundation are headquartered in Centennial, Colorado.

Is your Executive Director the same as a Headquarters Director or Administrator? (I figured it wasn't the President due to the article). It's a hired position, correct?

Yes, it's a hired position. The past one (Karen) was not a Gamma Phi either.

Was that weird having a non Gamma Phi as the ED? Just curious because Alpha Phi's last ED was not an Alpha Phi but the new one is. (well actually the "new" ED has been on staff over a year now!)

It happens often, I think. Alpha Gam had an ADPi ED for many years. Her successor was an Alpha Gam who had most recently worked for AXiD. The current ED is a Theta (and the Foundation ED is a DU).

What's important is having someone who is good at administering the headquarters of a fraternal organization that has many, many volunteer member/leaders (and never enough money!). A non-Greek (gasp!) who had the administrative experience could do it (but then she--if a she!) could be initiated.

I've always wondered how they handle orders for printed rituals and paraphernalia -- but come to think of it, the people at the printers or at the paraphernalia-makers aren't members. (In these days of "every computer is a publisher" obviously the ritual can be printed in house, but not so long ago that was type-set at a printshop.)

not to go into specifics.. bc i dont want to talk about anything close to ritual.. i dont think things such a rituals or cetain parts would be sent out to printshops or even typed for that matter..

You could easily print things out like that in house with the proper equipment. I'm pretty sure that's how we do it.

I didn't deal with Karen very much so I couldn't tell you if it was "weird".

Why the reluctance to talk about ritual? I'm not referring to the specifics of your fraternity's ritual, but about rituals in general. We all have them.

It's not betraying anything to say that in my experience the secrets (what the letters stand for, or the password) are printed as blanks. I've been a member of five fraternal organizations (Job's Daughters, Alpha Gam, Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, P.E.O.) and each of them does it that way. Plus, I bought an Eastern Star ritual at a used book sale and that's how it's published.

Take a look at your chapter's ritual sometime. Dollars to doughnuts, it was printed by a printshop years before personal computers. And surely you don't think a bunch of alumnae get together to stitch up the initiation table tablecloth or the initiation banner or the herald's stole or whatever your GLO's special attire is. (Masonic costumes are the greatest! I don't remember which men's org. it was--not Shrine; Royal Arch? I cannot keep them straight-- the temple where my Job's Daughters Bethel met had a huge costume storage closet with "jeweled" crowns and embroidered robes.)
