Question Yard?

Forgive me, Ms. Moderator, if there's already a thread similar to this. I searched and saw none.

I always see references to "the yard", and I know that an actual yard exists on the campus of HBCU's. There's no yard on my campus (not to my surprise), and I'm just wondering if any of you attend/attended predominantly white universities where there was actually a yard.

Oh Mi Gosh!

That is hilarious! But you are right. I myself attended Tuskegee, doesn't get more HBCU than that. And let me tell you, "The Yard" was more frequented than "the classes", especially in the Spring and Summer months. If you attend a majority school, maybe you guys have "a lawn" LOL!!!

Sweetest Diva I don't know.

When I went to a white school part time last year, what we call a "yard" they called a "quad." However, when I asked this question to some oldheads, they told me that the yard was the school. The dorms, the "yard", the cafe and all of that. I hope that helps.

The "yard" at my school down south was just like the main mall area in front of the bookstore and eatery. It was a mainly white school. But EVERYONE hung out on the YARD! Regardless of color.

I attend a school in the north now where we are a REAL minority. I asked my BF when I first got here did they have a place where people just hung out between classes, watched people, and gossiped like what I had showed him when he visited my school. He just looked at me like I was crazy.

I hate this d%nm school....

Well, I went to Tougaloo, a small, private HBCU in Mississippi. We only had 1200 students, so the whole campus was the yard!

I think there is a general rule that schools in the north=no yard. We definately dont have a yard, but we have a dining hall where chicken wing and french fries are the main course. this is where "we" all hang out, gossip, and eat chicken. My BF goes to an HBCU and his "yard" seems so cool compared to what we have....

If I am not mistaken, "The Yard" refers to the entire campus, no matter where you are. I did my undergrad work at an HBCU in the south, and now I'm at a non-HBCU in the north and they refer to the yard in the same way as we did in the south; the whole campus.

If I was off campus and I asked my friend where was so-in-so she would say up on the yard; meaning on campus.

Okay y'all, maybe I'm confused. We have a section on campus that's affectionately referred to as "Little Africa" where we just chill and hang out. I was under the impression that on the campus of HBCU's there was a yard that included plots for all the NPHC orgs on that campus. I know this is/was the case at some HBCU's like Huston-Tilotson in Austin, from what my mama told me. But even thought she thinks she's young, she's really an old-head AKA ( ), so I don't know about now. Am I just misinformed?

I attended UofMich and we don't refer to campus or a chilling place as a "yard". We do have an area where peeps go and chill called the Diag (short for Diagonal). It's actually the center of campus and there's lots of lawn areas and benches for peeps to hang out or whatever. It wasn't until I became Greek that I started using the term yard. Most of the minority Greeks on campus call it a yard. But everyone else just says campus or they go hang on the Diag.

I went to a predominantly white school in Texas, but we refered to the entire campus on the yard (i.e. - "There are no Alphas on the yard." means the Alpha chapter has no members in it for some reason).

Would this "quad" happen to refer to the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa)?

Hey SF's!
112, You are correct, sir! The entire campus was considered the yard. For example, If the Deltas ran the yard, it seemed more fitting to run the entire university, as opposed to a specified area of grass in front of a building! seems more impactful that way! That's why we included the entire campus in the "yard" category! Hope this helps

<<soror6 wondering if she is prepared to be considered an oldhead....dammit, she figures out she is!>>
