I think he belongs in the Hall of Fame.

I don't even think it is that big a deal that he bet on baseball. Alex Karas bet on football and he was out of the league only 1 year. He is in the Hall of Fame.

Charles Barkley bet on basketball. He even bet on a game that he was playing in. The NBA fined him about 20k.

Michael Jordan gambles millions in the casinos every year. It has been reported that he has even bet 6 figures on a single hole of golf. One of MJ's gambling friends is even one of the same guys mentioned in the Dowd report that rips Pete Rose.

How come nobody complains about all the other people in sports that gamble?

I think it's different when you owed 500K or so to organized crime because of your gambling debts. There are too many things about Rose that are just not above board.

Now he's admitted he did it. Since he admitted he did it, should anything be different? Hell no. The dude did it and now he admits it. He's guilty and should receive the punishment that baseball gives to someone that's guilty of this offense.

I don't feel sorry for him. He's an idiot that gambled away his money and his reputation... and he lost.

Ok he was stupid in his gambling. However, like madmax said, he wasn't the first to bet on sports and he won't be the last.

He was a great player and belongs in Cooperstown

My opinion has been from the start is, yes, he belongs in Cooperstown. After he dies. Also after Shoeless Joe Jackson gets in. Until then, no way!

Yes, he deserves to be in the Hall (along with Shoeless Joe Jackson).

It is different than what? Is it different when Jordan bet millions in the casinos that are controled by organized crime? Maybe you think Jordan is placing his bets through Mother Theresa. Is it different when Charles Barkley bet 500k on Super Bowl xxxii? Is it different when Charles Barkley bet on a 76ers vs Knicks game that he was playing in?

If you are so concerned with integrity then maybe you should start a petition to kick Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle out of the Hall of Fame.

He bet as a manager not as a player. As a player he belongs in the Hall of Fame. He was mister hustle and the all-time hits leader. The Hall of Fame isn't about a person outside of the game, its just about what they did in the game.

Vote him in!

The funny thing is, Pete is already in the Hall of Fame. I was lucky enough to visit Cooperstown for the first time last year and almost ran through the displays to find the Reds' display area. Pete was clearly a part of the display, IIRC they had photos and either a game bat or his jersey included.

He deserves to be voted in for his achievements while playing the game.

and quite a few others...

look, the guy isn't a good person; not at all, not even a little bit. He's taking away Hall of Fame weekend from a couple of very deserving guys in Paul Molitor and Dennis Eckersley, both who had personal problems but got past them.

As you said though, the Hall of Fame isn't filled with saints - why not put in another devil?
