What's up with guys...

Alright fellas, Last night I went to see Matrix: Revolutions with my boyfriend. At the theater there were a bunch of guys seeing the movie with other guys (which was cool)...
My question is: Why do men feel the need to put a seat in-between each other when they are at the movies... What's up with that? Can anyone give an explination?

I know exactly what you're talking about. Last year I went to go see a movie wtih my boyfriend and a few of his brothers and my sisters, and it was all either boy/girl boy/girl or boy/space/boy. It was really funny because we took up 3 rows when we would have all fit in one.

my friends and i have always done this.

i like to do this because when im at the movies, i like to have BOTH arm rests...and most of my boys do too. when we sit next to eachother, not only does it look GAY that two men are sitting so close in an empty theatre, but we have to share one arm rest, which is GAY (x2).

Precisely. Any other explanation is bullshit. I also don't like it when the girl think that if you're at a movie, you need to touch or kiss. I want to watch the frigging movie over here.

lol. That is a perfect explaination, funny cause our comm professor spent 15 minutes discussing communication and behavioral patterns for men who do such action, when all it takes is one word: ARMRESTS.

Haha thats so funny that guys have to be so selfish and have BOTH armrests lol I just think its funny that it seems like they cant sit next to eachother in a movie but when they get real drunk they can hug and tell eachother " I love you man" like 50 times lol

My thoughts exactly!! I never really payed much mind to it untill a good friend of mine pointed it out. Now everytime I got to the movies and see a bunch of guys that is all i ever see.

Since its normal to see guys "space out" at movies the real question would be what would we do if we say a few bunched together...partically just two guys?! We would think they were gay or something. Just goes to show how we label.

We always called it the "Straight Seat" as in, Dude, there's no room for us and the straight seat there.

It's also infinately MORE homosexual if it's a sparsely populated theater. If there's 5 empty rows around you and you sit next to your bud you look like you and your buddy are out painting the town lavendar.

I always thought it was because of the reasons explained by Rudey and champ.

If I'm watching a movie with a girl, I like having both armrests too. I don't mind sitting next to her, but I'm not trying to be a homophobe by sitting two seats away from her. If the theater's not really packed, then that's what I'll do.

Men have different rules in our society in terms of proximity (closeness) than do women.

The armrest is actually something used to illustrate that rule quite often by comm professors.

I put a seat b/w myself and whomever I go with...I like the space, the armrests, and the room for coats, bags, etc...BUT, if the theater is crowded, I won't be so selfish...

I've always sat next to the person, never thought to sit with a seat in between us... and it's funny, but I never realized that guys do do this, but now that you brought it up and I'm thinking about it, yeah I've seen this. Good explanation with the arm rest thing... there have been times I've been with my ex and we'd playfully fight over the arm rest... ha should have just moved over one!
