rush give away goodies
What are some good/different/interesting things your chapters have given out during rush to help with PR? i.e. key chains, cups, things along those lines.

our nationals makes rush videos for PNM's, as well as "rush phi psi" magnets. its really actually cool because we get all this cool stuff for free to give out.

I was under the impression you weren't allowed to give things out during rush, so I guess check to be sure it is okay first.

Yeah, definately check first. I know at UF you can't walk out of a sorority house with a cup of water or napkin (it's considered a gift). The gifts come with getting into the houses on bid day- and of course big/little....
*mk* i wish sororities could have given us stuff (ohh well)

We have interactive 3 1/2" mini-CD ROM's. The edges are flattened so they are kind of in the shape of business cards. They interact with the Sigma Nu website show history, purpose, our LEAD program, etc.

We can't give anything out. I thought it was an NPC rule. We even have to take their nametags--but we give them back to them at Bid Day.

This is yet another difference between the IFC and the NPC, it seems. Sororities can't give anything away to rushees anymore -- but I think fraternities can. Anybody want to enlighten us on this?

During informal recruitment, you can give stuff to women. Only during formal recruitment are you not allowed to give things. We always have little candles, glasses with candy, and that sort of thing for women during informals.

Back in the olden days when I pledged, we were given some VERY nice "favors". I would think the major reasons were budget (one group usually wanted to "do things better" than the other groups). Also, in a way, it was sort of a waste of money, in my opinion, why give out lots of gifts bearing your letters to people who will never be initiated into finding out what they really mean.
In some cases, it may have led to someone pretending to belong to a group but really didn't.
I guess every campus might have differences, but I would think that rules apply for formal and informal recruitment...at least "favor" wise.
My first guess in $$!!
As for sorority versus fraternity rules, that will be one thing that never will be universally agreed on! *Venus and Mars, etc.

That's how was at Pitt, too. I thought it was an NPC rule.
At one time, we were permitted to give out favors. One group gave a necklace with a pearl on it!

I'm not sure what they did this year, but i can tell you from the past.
we used to give out good stuff at tables in the student centre, but since have limited it to things like lollipops and candy canes with tags that have our contact info.
during our info parties we hand out little grab bags that have candy, pencils, erasers, candles, a flyer and then other odds and ends.
One year our theme was "I AM PHI SIG" (inside the maple leaf...you know like the beer ) so we put all the goodies inside mugs that had maple leaves and "Canada" all over them (that we got from our ever so fantastic dollar store!)
I think that was the coolest..maybe cuz I was MRC and in charge of it all!
we're small chapter so recruitment budget is really tiny (eg it was around $150 bucks the year i was MRC)

Um silly question maybe, but how do they fit in and operate with a computer CD-ROM drive designed for round standard size CD-ROMs?
P.S Do you know from your nationals if they are expensive to get produced, for the potential members?

The small cd-roms that are similar to business cards should in theory work in any cdrom...they can also be bought as blanks and you can burn them yourself...Many cdrom drives have a smaller inner circle to fit them in...or you just have to make sure to line them up correctly. The only cdroms they wont work in at all are slot loading cdroms...
