Question Rules of Attraction

Has anyone else seen this? I just saw it last night with some friends. There were some really disturbing things going on!

All of my friends and I were kind of quiet afterwards, and one of them was like "We're all quiet". Another one said "I'm still confused about that movie". There just wasn't any closure. Lots of loose ends. It was based on a book, which I may have to pick up just to see if it clears anything up.

I have to say James Van Der Beek definately wasn't Dawson in that movie. And the gay boy has gorgeous eyes. I can't decide if I like it or not. Definately some things I liked, but overall I'm not sure.

*warning* if you have issues with drugs, sex or homosexuality you might not want to see this. A couple actually walked out, but everytime something involving "gayness" happened they were making rude comments to each other. So they were apparently offended by that. SPOILER------>

...I was personally offended by the opening rape scene, which they didn't seem to have a problem with

<---- END OF SPOILER

Anyways, wanted to get some other folks' perspective.

It was definitely a different take on college life lol.

I liked the parties though. I definitely would have liked to go to a college that had dressed to get laid parties that had girls walking around nude a a prelude to sex . . . lol

But the movie was definitely strange and didn't have many consistent plot lines.

After I posted this, I went to Rotten Tomatoes.com to see what kind of reviews it's getting. I discovered that the book (of the same name) was written by the same guy that wrote American Psycho. In fact, the character of Sean Bateman (James Van Der Beek) is Patrick Bateman's little brother (Patrick is the psycho of American Psycho).

This helped clear some things up. American Psycho was also set in the 80's and one of the big themes was that this guy was seeing how much he could get away with. Power & fame & money weren't enough. I don't recall the author's name, but he seemed to question the materialism that was so rampant in the 80's (and still hasn't really gone away). I can see that same kind of thing in this story.. these are rich kids pushing the limits because they have nothing better to do.

I would recommend it if you're looking for something different. Or shocking. Although I'm still not sure I would consider it a 'good' movie.

I saw the movie the other night, too. Overall I liked it, even though it's a really intense--the bathtub scene was pretty disturbing. I want to see it again, but I'll wait till it comes out on DVD (they cut out some stuff to get an R rating). By the way, Brett Easton Ellis wrote the book version of this movie and "American Psycho". The book is just like the movie, so I don't think it would clear anything up. They're also making a movie out of his book "Glamorama" which will focus more on the Victor character (Kip Pardue) from "Rules". That should be interesting.

Bret Easton Ellis is my hero...even though half the time I cannot figure out what is going on in his books (and the movies do not clear anything up!) I like that the major plotlines are left up to your imagination.
