Bylaws

Hey Sigma Alphas
The sisters of Sigma Alpha at Chico State need your help! We are doing a huge re write of our bylaws and any suggestions would be helpful. If anyone has a copy of their chapter's by laws that they could email me at mgoldfin@mail.csuchico.edu that would be great

I can try to e-mail them to you this weekend, it just depends on if I can get to a computer with a zip drive (We keep everything on zip disks *sigh*) If you need anything else, please PM me ASAP because I am going to the house this weekend and we could send you anything you need

I helped the Tau chapter with their bylaws before I left Clemson. I don't have the final draft, because they were just starting to vote on amendments. I can send you suggested changes and whatever else I have on disk.
Let me know if you have any questions about the files.

Michelle-

I know by-laws can be a difficult task for a new chapter, but it's worth it in the long run. The sorority used to have a set of by-laws that chapters could use as a starter set. It basically had areas to fill-in the blank to begin customizing things for the chapter. Then the chapter could look at other chapter's by-laws to further customize them.

The National Board has a meeting coming up next weekend. I'll inquire about the starter by-laws at that time, and get back to you.

Congratulations on your position as Vice-President.

Sisters,
Robin

Hi Robin

We already have by laws in place and I believe our charter members used the starter bylaws from Nationals. We are just trying to redo them so there is less room for interpretation. We also are looking for new ideas when it comes to fines and attendance policies. Any ideas would be helpful!

Michelle-

Sorry I misunderstood you. Some key areas to focus on are membership status and attendence at events.

In regards to membership status, the chapter should outline their requirements for inactive status (keeping in mind that they must agree with the National Bylaws). Also early alumni status is an item that many chapters include in their bylaws for members that have gotten into graduates school and are in their final semester.

In regards to attendence at events, the chapter should outline how many excused absences are allowable, fines for unexcused absences, fines for absences from required events, etc.

The Alpha Eta chapter has a standards committee that enforces such absences and fines. It seems to work well for that chapter.

As you read by-laws from other chapters, you find other items that will work well for your chapter. Best of luck to you, and I hope to meet you soon (maybe at convention?).

Sisters,
Robin

I would like to thank all the sisters who sent me copies of their bylaws. After a long meeting and a lot of prep work we got our new bylaws.
