Greek Womens Mag

Its been mentioned, is anyone serious about this? I was wanting to make one for my campus at one time. Does anyone want to help get it off the ground?

Ideas?

Maybe have articles from our own mags (ie, the Phi Sig Sphinx...)

Smile Awesome Idea

Well I haven't even rushed yet, but I can't believe that there isn't a magazine like this already. I've done alot of broadcasting and journalism so if and when I join the greek community, I would love to help out. It'd be great to be there when things first get rolling. I also think (especially as someone still on the outside) that it would be a great way to get some good publicity out to people who may want to join but hear only controversial things.

So, are you thinking you would focus more on the national level or on specific chapters?

What kind of articles would you include? Like philanthropist of the month all the way to cutest theme parties? (hey wait, that would be very similar to this very message board...lol)

Maybe you could do an internet magazine...I hear those are a good way to start.

Anyway, I hope you go for it, and good luck!

I think this is a great idea! I could contribute some articles from the local/Up and Coming National point of view.

Talking YOU ALL ROCK!

Wow, granted its not a HUGE response- but WOW! Im so happy people like this idea!

Heres my scribblings while reading all your input!

All Women Greek Magazine:

Do we want to start it on a website?
Name for it? Real Sorority Life? Greek Women Today? GW? What?

Publishing: I can talk to the people who publish our NED Notes for TBS, about costs, processes... it dosent have to be fancy in the beginning!

Costs: Subscription price? Donation? Maybe send a draft to NPC to see if they can aid?

JoyfulMuse: I think an outsider's POV would be awesome! And if you rush etc- we could follow you through the process, or something....

Philantrhopist of the month- Greek 101 does this with chapers in its catalog, or maybe it someone else, but they do- and I love it! (and not only cos a Phi Sig chapter was in the top 3)

POVs from social, honorary, etc

Party ideas, themes

GC topics as articles, such as the MTV thing, written well of course

Fraternity POV

Local and U&C POV ideas, tips, etc

Tips for Rush, New Members, Chapter Ops etc

Help for New Chapters

Articles from National Mags

Tradtion spotlight- like if you have a really cool traditon in the chapter or org

Chapter spotlight/bio

Org Spotlight/bio

*breathe*

Okay what do you think? If you want to, we can move discussion to my message board on my site: http://www.geocities.com/starletali or keep it here.

I am absolutely serious about starting this, and I would love help/input/someone who knows more than me/people who know less than me - basically other serious people, cos I think this could totally rock!

If youre on, IM me! StarletAngel521

Sounds like a fun idea! I like the fact that I get to learn about different sororities on Greekchat, why not have it in a magazine?! It would be fun! I would be willing to write something for it. Not sure what, btu I would love to. Maybe something about Theta chapters around my state or seomthing. Well we will see what happens I guess!

Brain is foggy, but. . .

There is (or was?) a magazine entitled "Fraternity and Sorority Magazine" that I have received through my GLO because I am on national staff. They sent it to us one year I guess as a "see what you think" kind of thing. It contained articles selected from the different GLO magazines currently published. I THINK it was published by the National Fraternity Editor's Association? ( I don't even know if that is the right name!) I'm going to convention in 2 days so I'll ask around there.

If I remember correctly, this magazine was not widely circulated to collegiate greeks (maybe one to each chapter, if the GLO decided to purchase it?). Anyway, I will see if I can find out something, and bring back some ideas/things to consider.

BTW, my husband used to be the circulation director for a state magazine that was free, but going to a paid publication. He can give you LOTS of things to consider when you get to that point!!

GOOD LUCK!!! Keep me posted on how things are going!!

I think this is such an awesome idea.

There is a publication in Columbia, MO that is published by a Univ. of Missouri Greek Alum.

They try to cover all things greek at Mizzou. It might be helpful for some ideas.

It's called the Greek Chronicle.

Well, I'd be for it!

I think it should target Greek members, not Greek affairs personnel (not that they couldn't read it, but they probably already have a publication). We all read our own sorority's magazines, but so rarely do I ever hear about other GLOs. Who's expanding, what trends are happening in rush, what campuses are expanding (or forbidding) GLOs, how alums are staying involved, what NPC is doing ...

I would advise starting with a website. Print costs, even with a controlled circulation model, are expensive. The web is a much more cost-effective method of publication, at least until a reader base is established.
