I think people sometimes misconstrue political correctness with courtesy. Treat people with the same courtesy and respect you would expect to receive from others and everything will be just fine.

Good Question
It is important but..but important in a manner such that we should not have to think too much about it...i.e breathing, showing respect to our elders, and

I personally believe it is WAY OVERRATED. It doesn't allow for intelligent discussion because there is always a concern as to how something is phrased as not to offend. If I'm civil, then I'm not going to say anything to personally offend, if I have a different point of view and am in an intelligent conversation with another civil human being, then there is an understanding that we will agree to disagree.
Unfortuantely, alot of individuals lack common courtesy and civility and cannot interact with other people outside of their "clique" because they have not been taught how to be civil.

Thank you, Soror Jody, for this statement. As a society, common courtesy has pretty much disappeared. I find myself occasionally slipping out of what I was taught as a child, but I always have to check myself.
Side note: About 10 years or so ago, I attended an NABJ convention where a New Orleans TV anchor, who was black, railed against what he called "afro-political-correctness." Mainly, he was p***ed that people were calling him out because he belonged to the National Rifle Association and didn't support gun control or something like that. But I also think he was also griping about perceptions that black people should think in lockstep.
