Pensacola Christian

I know I've been absent for a while- but life has changed a ton (including a move from The DC area to Pensacola Fl (UWF has Phi Sigs, score) plus having a baby and getting my oldest step-daughter ready to find a college.

So, while being off this summer and spending time with baby- I've watched a lot of 19 Kids and Counting, which lead to my sleepless night research into the fundamentalist Christians and then to learn more about Pensacola Christian College.

Little did I know they had their own version of Greek life (with an org called Sigma Gamma Rho too... ) which I find a bit weird. They call them collegians and have "rush" and everything...

Thoughts?

This isn't traditional Greek life. There are 48 of these "collegian" groups on campus and they have Greek letters. Students are required to join one of these groups. It seems like a really structured way for a strict fundamentalist school to provide social activities for students. I believe Bob Jones has something similar.

I looked for a list too... Didn't see one. I did read on another site that the male orgs end in delta, women's in Rho.

I know their not 'real' orgs, I just find it all very weird. I saw some out at the baseball game on Sat.

I don't see a list.

So, their Sigma Gamma Rho isn't the NPHC Sigma Gamma Rho?

Evidently not. Odd how they've changed the definition of "collegian."

I can get they're not fraternities and sororities as traditionally understood, but why aren't they "'real' orgs"? They sound pretty real to me.

I wonder if they were originally something like "collegian societies," which over time got shortened simply to "collegians."

1. You HAVE to join one.
2. It sounds like you can pick whichever one you want to join (i.e. no selective membership) and it doesn't sound like they have anything resembling pledging.

Right, which means they're not like traditional—or "real," if you like—fraternities or sororities.

And as far as not having anything resembling pledging, the same could currently be said of SAE and of Balanced Man chapters of SigEp.

But the comment I was responding to was that they are not "'real' orgs." They do appear to be organizations, so unless they are fictional or figments of someone's imagination, they seem to be "'real' orgs."
