schedule conflicts?

Hi everyone! I start recruitment in about 3 weeks, after classes have started. I was looking at the schedule of recruitment from last year, and everyday rounds start around 4 o'clock. However, I have classes every day until 6. Though I was told by the woman in charge of the Greek Office (who is new and has also told me information that goes against what the woman previously in charge has said) that this is fine and won't impact my recruitment.

My question is, how can I know that I won't be missing the house that I would fit in the best? With the way my campus is set up, there's no way that I could be down to Greek Row anytime before 6:30, making me miss 2 and a half hours everyday..

Has anyone run into this issue before, and can they give me some advice please?

There are some schools, where if you skip class to attend recruitment, you are immediately released from recruitment - period. If your school is one of these, you don't want to skip class.

If you're getting conflicting information, go over the Greek advisor's head to the student life director (or whoever her immediate boss is) and ask to see the rules in writing.

The thing to keep in mind is you are certainly not the only girl who has late classes, so I'm sure they have some system in place to accommodate you. Although it is strange to have late classes every single day, you'll be able to work it out. DON'T skip class, and DO make sure all parties involved (both literally and figuratively) know why you are not at every event and/or on time. My guess is you are not at a super-competitive or big Greek school, so if you express interest and do all you can, they'll meet you half way, so to speak.

At the schools I've been involved with, we were told why a PNM was absent. It was up to us whether we wanted to invite her to the next round or not. Usually, it is hard for us to invite back someone we have never met or only met once when we already loved so many girls and couldn't invite them all back!

Hope that makes sense. I have a migraine right now, so I'm not the most coherent. I'm not sure if others have had a different experience.

33girl- Thanks for the suggestion! When I get to school I will do just that. I've also heard what about getting released from recruitment for skipping class. Even if my school does not do this, I still feel weird skipping!

DubaiSis- I know, it's really odd. On the bright side I have no class before 11 . And yes, you are correct, my school isn't too competitive so hopefully they will understand.

Dukedg-That's what I'm really worried about. I was told that the number of PNM's this year are 200, 500, and 800.. so I'm not really sure if they won't want to invite me back without meeting me. I'm hoping they'll all give me chances! Oh, and I hope your migraine gets better

Thank you so much everyone for your help!

Please re-read bolded above and check schedule for THIS YEAR. You may not have any problem. It may explain how two different Greek Advisors gave you two different answers.

Cheerio- I'm not sure if my Greek Life office is just behind or something, because I can not find any schedule for this year! Our panhellenic site really isn't too informative on a whole. Recruitment is still 3 weeks away, so maybe that's why they haven't been posted? Eitherway, thank you for the suggestion! If you would like (and have time!) I can always send you the links to my panhellenic sites.

cr2817, panhellenics can sometimes be neglectful of their websites at non-competitive schools.

Even a top-weight education school (University of Chicago) can let their Panhellenic Website stale.

Don't panic, you came to GreekChat. 33girl and DubaiSis have given you great advice.

Please engage with your proper Recruitment and Panhellenic ladies, and do it BEFORE school begins. I know you'll make contact with a smile, as practice makes perfect!

Also here on GreekChat, Irishpipes posts the NPC Recruitment & Chapter Listing: Fall 2012-Spring 2013 thread where you may view 2012 dates for your recruitment IF irishpipes had them available from your campus.

I second what 33girl and DubaiSis have said. You can be dropped from recruitment if you skip classes to attend recruitment. You are in college, first and foremost, to learn.

I'm sure this isn't the first time this issue has come up at your school. Talk to your recruitment counselor. You may be able to arrange split parties squeezed into your available time (e.g. if parties go for 30 minutes, you spend 14 minutes at one party, your RC pulls you out, you spend 2 minutes running to your next chapter, and you spend 14 minutes at that chapter's party) - that way you can visit everyone, albeit for a shorter time period. Or, if you don't have a full schedule for a given round, your schedule could be arranged such that your breaks are all before 6:30pm so that you miss as few parties as possible for that round.

Good luck!

Make sure if you know any girls who are currently in any of the chapters that you let them know you are interested, may have schedule conflicts and will attend everything you can. That way if there is discussion during member selection, those girls can know to go to bat for you. They CAN'T guarantee you anything, but expressing your interest can help a lot. And you want to do that now, before strict silence kicks in and they're not allowed to talk to you (if that applies at your school).

Cheerio- I'm not gonna lie, GC has been MUCH more helpful than my schools site! Once I get to school, I'll go to our 'Meet the Greeks' event and talk to the women there.

aephi alum- That's a great idea that I hadn't even considered! I'll definitely ask that ASAP. It seems like a good way to participate without having my classes suffer.

I know I have said this many times, but again thank you everyone for your help! I'm not sure what I would do without GC
