Hi!

I'm a Kent State sorority alumna (and grad student.) I'm glad you're choosing to go Greek. It's the best choice I ever made and it made a very big university seem like much more of a home.

Every chapter at Kent is amazing. I know people say that, but they really are. They each have amazing events, homes, philanthropies, etc.

My best advice for any PNM is to keep an open mind. If you can openly consider every chapter (and ignore the opinions of other PNMs/your dorm mates/etc.), you stand a good chance at finding a home.

In terms of your class standing, being a sophomore is really not a big deal. There are always many sophs because people tend to transfer in after spending freshman year at a branch campus.

I would suggest visiting the Panhellenic site (http://www.kentsororities.com/recruitment) and find out about Sorority Info Night dates. That's a great opportunity to meet sorority women from every chapter (and sign up for recruitment, meet the women from Panhellenic who will be helping you, etc.)

There will also be women from each sorority at Blast Off this weekend. So be sure to stop by each of their tables and meet people!

Let me know if you have anymore general questions. The website I posted should answer many of them. Good luck to you!

Thank you so much!
The reason I didn't rush my Freshman year is because I am an out-of-state student and I just really wanted to adjust to the school better, plus I really didn't know that much about going greek. Do you think I should find a "rush buddy" to go through the process? I am a little nervous to go to all of these events alone.

There are pros and cons about having a rush buddy, but I honestly think there are more cons.

Pro:
-You have someone to talk with about rush.
-You don't have to walk into the first day alone.

Con:
-Their opinions/thoughts about which sorority they like can rub off on you, even if it's really not how you feel.
-You can end up worrying more about how your friend is doing than you are about meeting the sorority women.
-You might feel guilty if you get a bid and she doesn't (or vice versa).
-You probably won't be in the same rush group anyway.
-If you're too attached at the hip to someone, it can scare some sororities if they like you but don't like the girl you're with. They might assume you won't take a bid from them if your friend doesn't get one too, and then neither of you get one.

No one, especially not the sorority members, are going to judge you if you go through rush on your own.

Plenty of people go through without friends. I find that once you sign up for recruitment and go to Greek Info Nights and stuff, you'll start to meet/make friends with other PNMs. If you live on campus, you may be able to find other women in your hall who are going through as well.

So much great advice! I will definitely keep those in mind. So when being put into recruitment groups, do they put sophomores with other sophomores? Also, how is rushing your second year different from rushing freshman year?

^^^^I'm not sure if they do or not. That is a question for Sorority Info Night. Also, rushing as a soph is largely the same as a freshman. You may know more sorority members from dorms/class last year than the freshmen do, though.
