Can someone explain snap bids to me?

1) What are they?

2) I know you won't know HOW often they happen, but is there any likelihood of it occurring?

3) Let's say I'm at a school where 1200 girls rushed. There are 13 sororities and maybe 50-60 spots open.

What do I do to increase the likelihood of a snap bid?

Snap bids are only given out on Bid Day by any groups who have not pledged to quota.

After Bid Day, if a group has slots open, it is called COB or COR, continuous open bidding or recruitment. You would need to ask your Greek Life office if any groups are participating in COB/COR and what you need to do to let them know you are available and interested.

It's a bid given out to a PNM who may not have matched with any of her choices during recruitment during bid matching so that she will have a bid and participate in bid dy with everyone else. Chapters not reaching quota during regular bid matching, have the opportunity to reach it by snapping up some of these women who would otherwise have gone bidless.

Women generally do not TRY to get snap bids, it's just offered and they accept/decline. Since it's a part of formal recruitment, they don't even know their bid is a snap bid. Often, they get them at the same time every other PNM gets theirs.

However: Snap bids only occur during the bid matching process of formal recruitment.

If Bid Day hs passed, then formal recruitment is over so is the timeframe for snap bids.

Now there MAY be OPEN recruitment opportunities after formal recruitment. Chapters not at total may have some openings, but I do not know if UT has open recruitment (many competitive schools do not, and chapters just wait til next formal recruitment.)

Not always true. At my school, the rule is they have to be given before the pinning. E.g., if Polly PNM accepts XYZ bid on bid day, goes to bid day, drops the next day, or day after, BEFORE pinning, Sally SnapBid can be pledged. Pinning is usually within three days of bid day for groups at my campus.

I saw one sorority at my school have to give out snap bids. Not enough pnm's accepted their bids which left the chapter under quota. They had about six spots to fill, and I saw those spots given out over the next week or so to girls who expressed interest in joining.

People don't usually shoot for snap bids. If you are interested in joining a sorority you should participate in the whole recruitment process.

I received my bid through snap bid. I think it was a great thing that can be offered to PNMs that do not get a traditional bid. Although, my case my have been an exception, I got a snap bid from my first choice. I did go to a school that only had 5 chapters at the time and not very competitive.

It is my understanding that snap bids are offered to PNMs that where dropped during recruitment. They did not drop out but where cut my the chapters.

I think they are, at least on some campuses.

But I don't think they are giving out any place at a high enough rate to make this an effective recruitment strategy from the PNM's perspective.

This is not true.. from the NPC Manual of Information:

If Preferential Bidding is used, women who indicate an Intentional
Single Preference and do not receive an invitation to membership are
eligible for Snap Bidding and Continuous Open Bidding, but are not
eligible for Quota Addition.
Resolved (1995), That a Potential New Member who withdraws from
the Fully Structured Recruitment process before the signing of her
membership acceptance shall be eligible for Snap Bidding and
Continuous Open Bidding.
