Out of State-Rushing at Bama?

HI!,

Will my being out of state mean its more likely that I will not get a bid? Thank you so much!

Here's a link to the UA bid list from the latest formal recruitment.

http://uanews.ua.edu/2010/08/ua-soro...-announced-11/

As you can see, every single sorority has new members from out of state - some even from (gasp) above the Mason-Dixon line.

Keep your grades up, participate in extracurriculars, and when the time comes, get recs. You have a while to think about all this though.

You're ahead of many women in realizing that just being a legacy does NOT guarantee you a bid - however, I would refrain from using phrases like "top 6" when discussing Greek life.

I think it's also worth mentioning that any sorority at Bama will be "active in campus life" and have a lot to offer a member.

I knew there was a "Big 6" (ick) at UT but never knew of a "top 6" (gawd) at Bama. Ditto what 33 said. My friend's daughter pledged Alpha Phi when they colonized and she became their president. Daughter is definitely a Damn Yankee.

Also, you haven't said anything yet to hurt yourself, but you've given us a LOT of information about yourself. Being so far from now I wouldn't worry too much about it, but I'd be very careful about how much you're sharing about your personal details.

Also, spell check is your friend.

Don't feel dumb! It's not like any of us came out of the womb knowing everything about sorority rush either. But what we're saying is kudos for trying to be prepared but remember that nothing on the internet ever dies. So if I were you, I'd go back and edit my post to remove all identifying information (legacy status, year in school, where you're from originally). While you're at it, go ahead and set all of your facebook/myspace/livejournal etc websites to private (or better yet, delete any that you no longer use/contained any form of drama). Just doing that will make you about a million steps ahead of any sophomore in high school I know, even one rushing at Bama.

Please don't feel dumb. You are a sophomore in high school with more years of education ahead of you. Plenty of time to improve. I'm not blowing sunshine here, I'm stating the obvious.

You are asking questions. You have time to prepare. Lots will happen to you in the next few years; enjoy high school, achieve the best grades possible, and keep in touch. There are many people on GreekChat who have direct knowledge of the SEC in general and of Alabama in particular and those are the people to listen to. I don't post on topics that are out of my area of experience.

ETA: psusue is a faster typist than I am & I agree with her points as well.

don't feel dumb. everyone makes a spelling mistake every now and then.

i know of plenty of girls from out of state, who never lived in alabama, who received bids, so don't fret about that. keeping yourself open to any invitations, having a good gpa, being an active participant in activities at your high school, with possibly a leadership position in one, recs.(more than one if possible) to each chapter with a legacy introduction form and a rec. from your delta zeta relative(if dz has a legacy intro. form) to dz & volunteer hours.

during the spring semester, bama holds a greek weekend-maybe you can find out about that on the bama panhellenic website. it might be helpful for you to attend, but not until your senior year of highschool.

you're both faster than me!!

If I remember right, I thought there was a note that over 50% of Alabama's new members (not pnms) were from out-of-state.

My sister rushed at Bama as an out of stater in fall '07. Here's the link to her story: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...ad.php?t=89547

Some houses have a reputation of being more welcoming to out of staters than others, but the important thing is to keep an open mind and just make connections with girls... don't worry about whether your out of state status is affecting you or not.
