brand new (:

new to greekchat, as my school is new to greek life! looking for any help people are willing to give as to what a greek organization (in my case, sorority) should involve / consist of. our school has never had any form of greek life before and we established two sororities & two fraternities the end of last year. as it stands, though, i don't think we really know what we're doing or should be doing. so any help or tips would be very much appreciated.

I'm not sure you're going to get a lot of help from people here.

There isn't any one way to found a sorority or fraternity. No one is going to tell you what you "should be doing". Figure out what you want out of your organization. Do research - in books - on the history of Greek Letter Organizations.

You're basically asking for us to do the work for you. Tsk, tsk.

no, not asking anyone to do work for me. the sorority has been established and recognized by the school. we have our laws, our priorities, what we stand for. i was asking for what we should be doing activity wise, how often do other organizations hold meetings, how the big / little thing works... we've kind of just been winging it.
again - i expect no one to do any work for me or my particular organization. i was only asking for suggestions on how to run some of the mechanics.

Take some time to browse the forums. There is a lot of information housed here.

The organization is your baby, though, so the mechanics are up to you. If you do what everyone else is doing, you wouldn't have something too original. Just do what fits your members and you should be OK.

Every organization is unique. You need to figure out what works for you.

Just basically repeat the process of:
- Come up with a new idea.
- Try it.
- If it works well, keep it.
- If it doesn't work well, throw it out.

As long as you have a good group of people, the ideas that you come up as a collective should be very good. As for getting ideas in the first place: search the forums.

Good luck!

Talk to your sisters and answer these questions:

  • What is important to your group? (Academics? Sisterhood? Ideals?)
  • How does Greek life/your org fit into your campus culture? (Are you unknown? Trying to grow?)
  • What do you have in common? (Ideas for philanthropy/service projects can come out of here.)
  • What do you want your group to look like in 10 years? (number of members, multiple chapters, etc.)
I'm sure that there are a hundred more questions you can ask yourself. Think about your answers to those questions, then figure out activities that support your interests and growth.

For example, if you are not well known on campus, do things that make others aware of you. Wear letters/colors on a certain day, eat lunch together as a group, join other groups/clubs and wear your letters, etc.

Do you see how I took something that you might want to fix, thought about how to fix it, and came up with three solid activities to support it?

Make your list of questions, and do the same.
