Schools with many former GLOs

I was reading the colonization/recolonization thread and thought I'd check to see who was formerly at my alma matter, Lawrence University (WI). I was shocked to see that there are more formers than currents in the sorority area! 3 currents with 6 formers, all really great NPC orgs.

Are there any other schools out there that seem to eat GLOs for breakfast? And lunch and dinner? Or is this highly unusual?

Lawrence now has 3 sororities (Kappa, Theta, and DG) and 5 fraternities (Phi Delt, Phi Tau, Beta, Sig Ep, and Delt) to serve a 1300 student population. I doubt the Greek system is strong enough to consider expansion at this time, but I would LOVE to see any of these groups recolonize, especially since they were all founded so many years ago. Interesting that they seemed to fall in pairs, though- 35/39, 68/69, 80/83.

1908 - 1969 Alpha Delta Pi
1914 - 1935 Phi Mu
1918 - 1968 Kappa Delta
1921 - 1939 Zeta Tau Alpha
1930 - 1980 Alpha Chi Omega
1940 - 1983 Pi Beta Phi

I think Akron used to have roughly 12 sororities and we're down to five now. Not positive on the number though but it did used to be a lot bigger. I think total was higher too?

In addition to the five it has now, Akron has had 7 other NPC GLO's, plus Theta Upsilon which was absorbed by DZ. I don't think there were ever 12 at once......the other seven were spread over the past 132 years.

I can remember meeting more than one alumna of Pitt whose sorority is no longer there, and it really shocked me - especially the little old lady who kicked me!

NPC Sororities no longer at Pitt:
Kappa Alpha Theta (sadly, they were the first to colonize at Pitt)

Alpha Xi Delta
Phi Mu
Phi Sigma Sigma

It seems that Pitt has hovered around 11 sororities since 1959-1960, when most were moved into Amos Hall.

Wow, groups that start with Alpha don't seem to fare so well there!

Indiana University has had a chapter of every NPC sorority except for Alpha Sigma Tau at one time or another. The sororities that currently do not have active chapters at IU are:
-Alpha Sigma Alpha
-Alpha Sigma Tau
-Delta Phi Epsilon
-Phi Sigma Sigma
-Sigma Kappa
-Sigma Sigma Sigma
-Theta Phi Alpha

Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Kappa, and Sigma Sigma Sigma all closed at the end of the 1993-1994 school year. The others were gone before my time, but I'm not sure exactly when. (The Greek Walkway at IU gives founding years for all GLOs that were ever on campus but not closing years)

IU has had chapters of all the Divine Nine, but I am not sure how many are there now.

Interesting, same with U of Illinois!

Right now the NPCs that are missing are

Interesting. Do you know why 3 chapters closed in one year? That sounds pretty extreme. That must have been really tough on all the Greeks. Although I suppose sometimes the "strong" chapters don't realize that if the "weak" chapters leave, the strong could become the new weak... And therefore they might not feel it right away.

San Jose State used to have a ton of Panhellenic sororities, too. A lot of them closed in the 60's when Greek Life was unpopular.

Housing is a challenge for any GLO that colonizes at UCSB. The original houses that were built in the fifties and early sixties, are gorgeous. However, it is almost impossible to get ANYTHING built in or around Santa Barbara, and that includes Isla Vista, the community adjacent to the campus. Still, AEPhi has a lovely newer house. (don't know when it was built)

Syracuse University has had every NPC chapter at one point in time except for Sigma Sigma Sigma. Alpha Gamma Delta closed in 2001 and Alpha Omicron Pi closed in 2000, and correct me if I'm wrong, Sigma Kappa may have closed around 1998.
