question about ut rush?
Hi everyone,
So I am a sophomore at ut and rush has been great up until now.
I got cut from all the houses except one which i don't feel is my home, the girls are great but i don't know if i connect. I really really want to be in a sorority. I am going to continue with this house until the end as per my rho chi advice.
quick question. Does Cob happen a lot at ut in austin? and if how do they let you know. I am really confused about the whole process and snap bids? is it possible to be picked up by a sorority if they have already cut you? and what is a suicide bid/pref (heard that around gc but not sure)
Any help would be appreciated. Have a great day everyone
thanks

COB (or COR) probably does not happen a lot in Austin after formal recruitment. COR is basically informal recruitment that the house holds to fill vacancies to reach total
You might want to ask your Rho Chi about how it works at UT. At some schools you have to "register" for COR @ the Greek Office.
I'm going to guess that COR opportunities are few & far between.... *maybe* after they have a whole bunch of seniors graduate?

It's not very likely to be picked up via snap bid by a chapter that has already released you.
To "suicide" is when you have attended 2 pref parties, but only list one on the bid card instead of listing both houses in the order of your preference.
Sometimes it's hard to connect during rush -- the girls who are rushing you might be doing it for the first time and are often just as nervous as you are... that doesn't necessarily mean that it's an awful match.
There are a TON of stories on here about girls who decided to give a house a try even after not 100% clicking during recruitment and ended up in houses they loved.
Good luck.

Are we talking about one invitation to pref or one invitation to skit day parties? It's my understanding they are not over until this evening.
I don't think much cob is done much at Texas, so those chances may be slim to none.
Did you get references in for all the groups on campus? That is so important at UT! I worked with the reference chair of my sorority this summer to get references from this area. Our Panhellenic told the girls they had to have a reference for each chapter at UT or they probably would not be invited back after the first round of parties. I think the Panhellenic site states that also.
Stick with your one group until then end and make a decision. Like Texas*Princess said, lots of people don't click until the end.
I do know somebody who pledged as a junior, but she was a transfer student.
Good luck to you.

I am just going to be completely honest with you because I have seen sooo many girls end up regretting not participating in greek life in situations like yours. I am going to assume that you had recs for all the sororities. As a a sophomore, you have a really slim chance of receiving a bid to a sorority at UT. As time goes on, your chances are only going to get slimmer. This really may be your prime chance. Now I hate to say this because this is what no PNM wants to hear, but oftentimes in circumstances like yours "I don't see myself fitting in with this group" translates to "they are awkward" which translates to "they are lower tier". These are probably the same groups that are going to be participating in COB, or taking upperclassmen. Plleeeeasse do not get sucked in to the "tier" mentality. At this point, you really have no chance of ever getting into a "big 6" sorority. Just being completely honest. It's not going to happen. All of the sororities at UT are HUGE, and very strong. I am sure that you can connect with many girls in the house, even if they are not the ones rushing you or if their personalities don't come across right away. If you are seriously interested in greek life, I strongly urge you to stick with this chapter, HOPE that you have the opportunity to accept a bid from them, try out their new member period and see how it goes for you. Also, during your new member period don't just sit there and expect things to come. You really have to TRY and make it work for you, get involved, get to know the girls! I really do wish you luck and I know it is easier for me to say where I am sitting than from where you are, but this could be a great opportunity for you ( and may be your only one). If not, there are other great opportunities for you to get involved on campus. Texas spirits, sweethearts, etc. are all great orgs to look into. I'm sorry if my tone came off as harsh, I really do wish you the best of luck and hope you end up happy! Maybe it would be helpful if you gave some background information? Did you rush as a freshman? Are you a transfer?

Believe it or not Ms. Smartypants I am aware of this "return" button. They would show up when I was typing but disappear once the post went through. Now that I am on a normal computer it is working, so I guess that explains that.

I think that this situation is one in which it's best to stick it out and see what happens.
Hopefully LadyLonghorn can confirm this, but I think it's unlikely that chapters at UT do COB, so it's defintely not something you should bank on being able to do.

There really is no other way to do paragraphs, so what else was someone supposed to say?

UT recruitment can be so tough, and I hate that you are hurting.
Back in the "olden times", girls would leave Texas and transfer to Tech or TCU to get into a sorority. The logistics and admission processes have stopped that, which is good.
Look at the other organizations on campus. A young friend of my joined Texas Spririts her freshman year because her parents wouldn't let her participate in recruitment. She loves it, and joined a sorority as a sophomore because she'd made some real connections with that group.
If you do go through again, just be aware how very difficult it is as a sophomore - difficult but not impossible.
You have so many wonderful experiences waiting for you. Don't let this get in the way.

hey everyone.
so I got the same call as texas darling. my rho chi called to let me know that i was dropped from the system. i hate how competitive rush is at ut. at any other school a girl with a high gpa and great recs would have a much higher chance. It kinda sucks. I know not to take it personally but what can you do. I am a teenage girl how can I not take it personally.
I really wanted to be in a sorority and was wondering if anyone knew if cob was even a chance of happening at a big school like texas. I am hoping that I get a call from someone. I know there are a lot of other orgs on campus but I feel as a sorority is the right place for me and I decided to not get involved with spirit groups because I wan'ted to rush a sorority even though I am a sophomore. (I knew it would be difficult but not this difficult) I don't understand why sophomores are looked down upon.
Thanks for all the support from gc it has gotten me through some tough times this week.

Sorry to hear that you were released.
According to alot of the other posts in this thread, COB is not the norm at UT. I'd suggest contacting the Greek Life office because they'd know if any new opportunities present themselves.
