I feel like its important to have some (non-hazing) pledge process as well! I personally loved my process. I feel as if I grew as a man and got to know my fraternity better.
Have weekly written tests that quiz your pledges on your fraternities/brothers information. If they fail the quiz, it shows you how their study habits are, or how much they care about your chapter. You can bring this up in chapter to the brothers, but don't blackball your potentials for failing (they may have failed due to an external factor).
We make our potentials also get interviews from the actives. In addition we give them extra points if they get alums or sweethearts interviews. We do this to know that each potential has made an effort to get to know each brother (and vice versa). Also, it allows us to make sure the potentials know our brothers and our fraternity. If they don't get the chance to know us, how do they know they want to be in our chapter...
You can make sheets that brothers fill out if they spent time with a potential. These events (for us) must consist of non-alcohol/drug, and legal events. We give extra points to pledges if they make an effort to get to know brothers.
Also, we try to hold a sporting event each semester: potentials vs. brothers. The potentials love this, esp. if they win of course.
Lastly, Hold events: movie nights, bar-b-q's, or going to the lake/beach/creek. Make sure the brothers and potentials are getting a chance to know eachother as much as possible.
GOOD LUCK!
