Why not try doing Crush Party or Grab -a-date. My chapter does Get Your Sister a Mister. This year we're having it at a corn maize with a hayride and such around Halloween. Also, another cool theme party could be a couples party or a kidnapping party. I assmued you were talking about mixers and socials, so that's just a few ideas of what we do

We had an anti-prom theme for one party. Then the theme was In the Ghetto.

Anti-prom is like jeans and a shirt. Basically everything prom but very informal.

Have a party called ship wreck. The basement is like "hell" in heaven and hell party that is called ship. The upstairs is tropical islands. The t shirts say "she's going down and everybody's getting off."

Oh my gosh, Optimist, that party idea is so funny. Granted, I would never use it for my sorority, but I ran into the other room because I HAD to tell my housemates about it.

Some other ideas are a graffiti party, foam party, 1950's/60's/70's/80's themed party, hayride/western party, beach party, heaven and hell party...there are so many different themes you could choose. I'd also suggest looking in Greek t-shirt catalogs and websites to see what other groups have done. You can get A LOT of ideas from looking through those.

A Mardi Gras party is always fun. LXA on my campus always held a golf mixer, everyone dressed in ridiculously preppy golf outfits.
Gatsby parties are amazing, but you have to go all out to make them really worthwhile.
Let us know what you guys decide on!

ChiOqt,
A Gatsby party is in tribute to the "The Great Gatsby" one of the great American Novels of the last century! (I adore the book, can you tell.)
So, you mimic one of Gatsby's parties, wearing 1920s clothing, decorating everything in the "art deco" style, and drinking champagne, (or ginger ale ) from beautiful champagne glasses.
I've been to Gatsby parties in the summer where everyone had to dress in white as well, men wore beautiful linen suits...it was gorgeous. But for collegiate purposes it's a fabulous party to throw especially if 4 organizations go in on it together and really go all out. It's ideal for a once-a-year tradition sort of party.
Did I explain it clearly?

I CANT BELEIVE NO ONE HAS SAID AROUND THE WORLD SOCIAL YET! ITs one of my favorite socials. What you do is decorate each room of the frat house in a diffrent theme/country, and have a drink that you would drink there in the room. For example, the frat we did it with had one room with 40's in it and that was the Bronx, one room with wine and that was France, one room with pina colodas and that was the carribean islands, one room with tequila poppers and that was mexico and we all end in the basement for the USA and drink beer! IT was a TON of fun! I suggest it to anyone!

schools out/around the world

I set up a variation of around the world with schools out. Upon arrival to my house the girls were led upstairs to different history class rooms, a bell would ring then everyone would move to the next room, and so on until the final bell rang and schools out! then everyone went downstairs to party.
Themed history rooms were:
Russian empire: white russians
Tropical hemisphere: mia tais
Mexico: Tequila/limes/salt shots
Germany: Jager bombs
Japan: saki bombs
history of the tour de francia: boxed wine

Formal Ideas

I am an ATO at University of Memphis and we thought of a formal theme called "Menage' Tau." We came up with this so that there could be more girls at our formals. That way the girls wont be as bored when the guys go and do guy stuff. Is it too risky? I know it isn't as risky as a porn party.

I think a Sock Hop would be really cute I don't know how people would react to it, but it could be interesting!

A Jungle theme could also be fun!

Rags to riches

My sorority and Phi Delta Theta had a mixer last year called rags to riches. Depending on your classification-- that determined your class. For example: The seniors wore formals and were served cosmos, wine, and "ritsy" drinks. The juniors were middle class and had mixed drinks, trash can punch and wore nice casual clothes. The sophomores were poor peopl eand just drank nice beer and other suitable drinks. The freshmen were homeless and drank 40's and drank liquer out of the bottle. It was the fraternities idea and it came together very well. It was really cool to see so amny different costumes!
