Lafayette (in PA) Investigating Alleged Sorority Hazing

A sorority chapter at Lafayette (in Pennsylvania) is being investigated because of allegations of hazing, according to the October 6 ’06 issue of the college paper. Alleged activities include encouragement of alcohol consumption and having to sleep at the sorority house “for several days.”
Please note that this is an investigation; no disciplinary actions or legal charges have been reported. Article is at:

\Brief excerpts from the article:

Sorority to be investigated for hazing
Brian Mason
Issue date: 10/6/06 Section: News

The Pi Beta Phi sorority is under investigation for hazing, President Dan Weiss confirmed this week.

A Pi Phi member, who wished to remain anonymous, said the investigation was a result of new member pledging activities. She said the pledges participated in parties encouraging underage alcohol consumption and were forced to sleep at the sorority house for several days.

Another member, who also witheld
[sic] her name, said the investigation was the result of a phone call from a pledge's mother to Terry Weber, advisor to fraternities and sororities.

Both Weber and Stephanie Morain '07, president of Pi Phi, declined to comment on the nature of the investigation.

Weber, however, said, "The college has a zero tolerance policy [towards hazing.] If there were any issues, we'd make corrections to get them back on track. Our policies are consistent to trying to maintain security with our new member education."

He confirmed no lawsuit has been filed against any members of Pi Phi . . . .

However, a spokeswoman from the national chapter
[of Pi Beta Phi] said, "We do take disciplinary action internally with our chapters, and that could lead to us closing a chapter."

. . . The spokeswoman declined comment regarding Lafayette's chapter.

Interestingly, this is a campus that requires that new members are initiated within 3 weeks of bid day and limit recruitment (formal and COR) to very brief time periods so that there are only two new member periods per school year in order to try to prevent hazing.

Why is that so hard to believe? I knew a lot of women who were just plain cold, and I'm sure they wouldn't mind beating someone senseless, and masking it as "ritual."

It does seem that I don't read as much about sorority hazing.

ETA: I do remember one girl in school that said she pledged a sorority there but dropped out. Something about yelling at her and blowing a whistle in her ear.

The administration also requires students to wait until they are sophmores to join Greek Life. Overall, the policies are just strange. The Tri Delta chapter is one of the two my Alumane Chapter supports; I've had many disscussions with the Chapter members about the college's policies.
