				Initation

Hey guys I had a question, I was in a fraternity last semester in college and was getting ready to initatie at the begining of this semester. However, durring inatiton (which lasts 3 weeks), and it started the 2nd week of class, I was really busy I understand that iniation is important. But I had two tests on the last week of iniation, and since we only had one week of class before we were busier than hell...I had to quit like three days before activation. I needed to study for my tests, did I do the right thing?

I find it very odd that the chapter in question wouldn't make some accomodation or help you. I have never heard of anything like that.

Yeah, that is pretty bad as ar as chapter programming goes. I'm assuming that everyone else kept the same or a similar schedule?
School should come first, so if you think it kept your academic performance up to standards, you did the right thing.

And I joined because I was promised help with classes which I got none...I just didn't like it at all. The house smelled like feet, there were no chicks, and the guys there were total douchebags so I moved out before Initation...lucky for me

Also they just told me that they would help if my grades suffered to the point "beyond repair" and this is comming from a guy with like a 2.21-2.25 GPA. See if I loose points on a test I can't exactly get the points back

 | Unfortunately, Rush is a time of such BS.

Good luck to you if you decide to go through it again. Not all fraternities are the same.

They will be more apt to help you with your work, will probably be co-ed, and some of them party just as hard as any social organization on campus.

 | Professional or service?

I guess it varies from campus to campus. I can say that my experience is that what you are saying is typically not the case. Apparently, our experiences vary though.

I don't want to get into a pissing match on this, but I really never felt like we had to compete socially with the service and professional organizations. As for professional organizations, my experience is that they have one business meeting per month, MAYBE a speaker...

Many chapters take their academics seriously. Some have very well kept up test banks as well as serious 'study hours' at the chapter house. I know that my chapter was extremely serious about these things. In fact, where the original poster's example was concerned, the brother who told him not to worry would not have been in that position, he would have been on social probation with mandatory study time at the house.

 | No. Please don't. I don't think my service fraternity wants someone who says "I don't want there to be people who smell like feet."

No I was saying that the house smelled like feet, I don't dislike smelly people...I just like where I live to smell normal.

 | Something about yur post tells me you are just playing with us. It seems a little insincere. Chicks? Puh-leese!!!

ETA - Initiation isn't a three week long process. It's a day/night or two of ceremonies max.

No I am completely sincere in this, it's just that they said there would be a "social" environment...when all it was were just a bunch of dudes drinking by themselves...not exactly what I would call cool. I like some parties where I can meet some nice ladies...not in a creepy way but I expect there atleast to be SOME females at a party...the dude to chick ratio should be somewhere AROUND 1 to 1 not like 10 to 1
