Pitt TKEs suspended for a year

The Pitt News online hasn't been updated- i'll post a link to the article as soon as it comes online, or you can visit www.pittnews.com -i'm sure they'll have it up in awhile.

It's actually an extensive article- they actually did research!!!! Their suspension has to do with alcohol violations, specifically a power-hour.

I can't say that i'm surprised. The fraternities that are not houses on campus really need to clean up their act. It's been this way since I pledged, and nothing's changed.

This is not the first time TKE has been suspended from Pitt's campus, I think. I know they have been on probation many many times- they'd try to get us to mix with them, but we couldn't because they were on probation.

The Dean of Students is Jack Daniel.

On a side note, a former Regent for Texas was Frank Erwin (Erwin Center). He drank a lot and attended many UT baseball games. A tradition (so I'm told) existed that, at the beginning of the bottom of the 5th, fans would yell, "Hey Frank, it's the bottom of the 5th!" He would kindly smile and lift his drink.

Pittsburgh's Greek community seems to have quite a bit of work to do... Hopefully their new Greek Advisor will help (and stay for more than a year).

OK, what kind of dingaling builds a beer pong table at his MOM'S house???? If anything, I hope they revoke his bid for sheer stupidity.

I found this article to be very true. It shows how things are working with our administration. Advisors and judicial boards are unimportant to administrators. They want to run the show and do as they like.

This is the first time I have ever heard anyone speak out against Harrigan or Daniels hopefully he won’t be "sent away" because of it. The TKE president is the first person who has been able to say what many on this campus feel. Administrators do not care about students and make advisors lives a living hell. I now feel bad for Anita this happened just as she left. I wonder if this was the straw that broke her camels back? (So to speak)

Not that I'm saying she has a camel... or that if she does it has a broken back... or that this did it. Ok I'm done.

			I really don't appreciate the beastiality reference...thanks.

I was wondering how the mom estimated her son's blood-alcohol level at a .29. I don't think she gave him a breathalyzer test. Hell, she let him build a beer pong table in her house, make her an accessory to his apparent rampant alcoholism.

I'm going to respectfully disagree on this one.

Do you blame them for not liking the greek system - we aren't exactly providing them with a shining example. Group that with two administrators who don't exactly understand greek life except from a risk management end of it and you get the results you are getting.

And a LOT of this has been a long time coming. I can't say I agree or disagree with it as it depends on the issue but it happened and now EVERYBODY has to pay for it in some way or another.

I would be upset with my mother as well. She had to know he was building a beer pong table in the basement...you can't hide something like that. Its a pretty big piece of wood...especially if you get into it, building cup holders and such. It is also a bit strange that she estimated his BAC at .29...doesn't death occur at .30 or something like that?? If I was his mother, and this kid was so frank with me about his drinking, I would give him a little lecture about not drinking THAT much and about the dangers of over doing it, but I certianly would not turn around and write a letter to the university.
And I have issues with the mother saying "Any young man put in a position like that is going to feel the need to prove himself, to impress the others," she continued in the letter. "Whether he did the deed agreeably or by force is not the issue. He should never have been put in that position."
People feel like they have to impress people in every situation, Greek related or not. It would have been the same difference if the guys on his floor were drinking, and he felt the need to impress his roommate. But because it was a fraternity.....we all know what happened.

Hes going to have to impress a lot more people, cause i'm sure now this kid looks like a HUUUGE tatletale and momma's boy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm certianly not blaming the mother for this happening But let's admit it, most people (unless you are a saint) look the other way when an underage person has alcohol. I'm guilty of it; I know half of my sisters aren't 21, but if I meet them at a party I'm not going to start chastising them on the evils of underage drinking; but at the same time, I'm not going to challenge them to a case rase, for the honor of Posiden.

If you're not on chapter property, and its not an event, and it is not at all chapter related...this is a pure case of underage drinking, not "My child's fraternity made him do it."

			blood alcohol level chart
The above chart estimates blood alcohol levels based on how many drinks you've had in an hour and your weight. If he weighed 200 pounds, then 13 beers is estimated at .29. The BALs in red are medically critical.

The article makes it sound as though it was a chapter event. This young man was a new member which means it is likely that he is under 21. If this is the case, they broke the law in providing him with alcohol and possibly hazing laws as well. They are lucky they are only facing University sanctions and not criminal charges.

The President of their chapter said that they aren't losing their charter. Per the article, the TKE national group was unreachable. I am sure that they will face some sort of sanctions from them as well, but it sometimes takes a little time for these to occur since National officers are usually located all over the country.

Beer pong is a fairly new phenomenon... it wasn't something we had heard about or did in college. Do you think his mom knew what it was? I wouldn't have known what one looked like if I hadn't watched Fraternity Life on MTV!

What I will say for these young men is that at least they accepted responsibility for their behavior. That was very mature of them, rather than denying the occurrence. But, their behavior was illegal and against their National policies.

 I was being dramatic.

My parents just aren't like that. If they had a problem with something I did then I would be responsible for it. (Please note, I'm not debating that this wasn't a hazing incident).

As much as I liked playing beer pong I think it is one of the chief ways students get sick on campus. Especially at pitt - they share the cups and don't wash them all night long! Ewww!

PS just a little note - don't jump to conclusions about whether NM's are always under 21! Although it seems apparent that he was.

I do have to say that my favorite part of these two articles has to be these quotes.

1. "Harrigan could not cite specific examples of the functions of the Greek councils, but she said she would at a later time."

2. "Harrigan explained that, while the Greek councils are responsible for processing "petty" violations, any violation of the Student Code of Conduct by a Greek organization goes directly before the judicial board."... And then I guess it goes to JD and he does what he likes. Whats the roll of the judicial board again?

FYI Harrigan is the interum greek advisor. (For those who don't know Pitt)
