While this may be a fashion rule for some people, I find it to be a little bit archaic. I love living in a state where for the most part it doesn't matter what you wear because it's nice weather basically daily.

And no linen? BAH! I wear what I want...I am not restricted by rules! I am woman hear me meow!

The only fashion rules that I adhere to strictly are:
1- No visible panty lines.
2- No open toed shoes with closed toed nylons.
3- No skirts that could be mistaken as upholstery fabric or skirts so short they should be lampshades.
4- No visible bra straps when wearing tank tops or spaghetti straps. That is what they make those lovely strapless bras for folks. (A rule I need to speak with my younger sister about.)

This includes those nasty clear bra straps. Ladies, trust me, it's just NOT a good luck. Strapless bras are available for a reason!

I know visible bra straps aren't the most glamourous thing in the world, but I really don't have a problem with them as long as they nearly match up with the shirt's straps and are a matching or complimentary color. Believe me, when you are well endowed, you can't find a decent strapless bra that is comfortable enough to actually wear.

LoL!!! It's so funny because some co-workers & I were talking about that exact same scent in "Serial Mom" just the other day.

I think the whole "no white after Labor Day" is a bunch of silliness. Why is Labor Day the magical day? It makes no sense! In past years it's actually been pretty popular (at least as far as Vogue & other fashion magazines go) to wear white after Labor Day with certain styles, so I don't see what the big deal is.

"Serial Mom" was actually the first R-rated movie I ever saw. Now whenever I hear about the white after Labor Day rules, I can only think of that movie.

as I've always understood it, Labor Day was the cutoff point because its the traditional end of the summer season.

That doesn't mean that people are supposed to go to wearing boots and turtleneck sweaters, but it just starts to look a bit out of place (to me, at least) to be sporting colors that are clearly trappings of the summer season well into september and october. And white is one of those colors.

The same thing goes for fabrics. Linen is a summer fabric. Just like velvet or courdoroy isn't apropriate in the summer, summer fabrics don't work well in the fall and winter.

If courduroy is not appropriate for summer then why would they make shorts made of it?

And to clarify my earlier statement about bra straps, I'm talking about black under a white shirt, or red under pink and stuff like that. I understand it's hard for the bigger busted women and in no way was I saying suffer, I just think in general it looks bad especially if the bra straps are hanging down the side of the arm or are really noticeable.

I agree with this... It's still really hot here in North Carolina, but by the time it's September, all the fall clothes have been in the stores for a month. Not wearing white is more like a transition between summer and fall. Some might argue that it's outdated, but it's not like a HUGE deal.
