Artificial Leg Used Against Owner

Friday, February 27, 2004

Ever want to yank off someone's leg and beat them over the head with it? A Virginia man may have done just that.

Police in Fredericksburg have charged Rodney Prophitt, 27, with pulling off his neighbor's prosthetic limb and then striking him with it, reports The Free Lance-Star.

The whole thing started Wednesday evening when Michael Clapp, 38, found a bottle of medicine missing from his apartment. He immediately suspected Prophitt and went next door to ask him about it.

Prophitt responded by knocking Clapp to the floor, then tugging off Clapp's fake leg and hitting him with it.

"At some point," city police spokesman Jim Shelhorse told the newspaper, "Mr. Clapp was able to grab his leg back, get back to his apartment and call 911."

Clapp went to the hospital with a broken nose. Prophitt was charged with felonious assault and petty larceny. Shelhorse didn't know what kind of medicine was taken or why Clapp had an artificial leg.

Cop booked with theft is put on desk duty

Shoplifting caught on tape, NOPD says

Friday February 27, 2004

By Walt Philbin
Staff writer

A police officer is on desk duty following her arrest during Carnival after she was captured on videotape in full uniform allegedly shoplifting a $10 lip balm from a Rite-Aid store while assigned to the St. Charles Avenue parade route, pollice officials said.

Tawanda McAfee, 31, a 6 ½-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department, was arrested late Saturday on Canal Street where she was working the Endymion parade route.

McAfee, whose regular assignment is as a school resource officer in the 4th District, was booked with theft. NOPD officials said she is on desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

After the Iris and Tucks

parades had passed Saturday afternoon, McAfee went into the Rite-Aid drugstore at Louisiana and St. Charles avenues shortly before 4 p.m. and removed the medicated balm from its package, placing it in a pocket of her police uniform, officers said. The balm, a nonprescription item, was originally priced at $16.99, but was on sale for $9.99, an officer said.

She left the protective wrapping on the shelf and left the store after buying a chocolate bar and an inexpensive lip balm, an officer said.

But McAfee had drawn the attention of a store employee, who found the empty package on the shelf, police said.

A member of the police Public Integrity Bureau was dispatched to the scene and reviewed the tape. Police officials didn't reveal the contents of the tape, other than to say the "shoplifting was captured on a surveillance camera."

PIB investigators went to a Mid-City stretch of Canal Street where McAfee was assigned to work the Endymion parade, and asked for her gun and badge, officers said. She was taken to Central Lockup and booked with a municipal charge of shoplifting, police said.

McAfee was initially suspended in an action police spokesman Capt. Marlon Defillo termed "an emergency suspension." She was later reinstated by police Superintendent Eddie Compass, and placed on desk duty pending the results of the investigation.

My good guess is that it was Herpecin or something like that. You know, those fansy-shmansy lip balms that fight fever blisters, cold sores and stuff. Who knows? That's a dumb way to ruin your career.

Teacher Bets Student to Jump Out Window
21 minutes ago Add Strange News - AP to My Yahoo!

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - A high school student jumped out a second-floor window to win a bet with a teacher, who has been disciplined, officials said. The teen was not injured.

Miami Beach High School science teacher Yrvan Tassy Jr. has been reassigned to a non-teaching job while police and school officials investigate the incident.

Tassy's class was discussing evolution last week when the student, who was not identified, talked about jumping out the window to prove his point, police said.

The teacher bet him $20 that he would be injured in the jump, according to police reports.

The student then jumped out the window, landing on his feet in a patch of dirt and grass, police said. He returned to the classroom and asked Tassy for his money. Tassy said he would bring it the following day, students told police.

The incident was reported to police Thursday.

"The teacher is being investigated by our detectives and there is also a personnel investigation," said Carlos Fernandez, a Miami-Dade schools police spokesman. "It doesn't look like this is something where there would be criminal charges. It looks like it will be administrative."

Tassy does not have a listed phone number and could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
