WishinHopin,

Wow! I hope everything works out for NBO either way. I don't think it's unreasonble to mix and match events with the other group so as to not lose all the hard work and effort it took NBO to set things up. But, I'm far from being an expert on Rush. I'm sure you'll get some great advice from the more knowledgeable GC'ers.

I do have to say that your Rush theme is soooooooo great. The T-shirts sound reallly nice. And I LOVE idea of subscribing to a lifetime of Sisterhood. That would definitely catch my attention. Especially because you're a small group. That would draw my attention. I LOVE the subscription card on the back, too. And making magazine covers!?! All in all, I think your hard work, determination, dedication, and all that UMPH you NBO ladies have, comes shining through.

GOOD LUCK!!

Corina, I love your Rush theme!! It sounds so cute-I love the way you described the T-shirts!! Very catchy, and definately cute!!

My opinion about doing a joint rush with GPhi-I think maybe you could do a couple events with them, and a couple on your own. That way, pnm's can see how the two groups interact, but they also get a chance to see NBO on it's own.

I can't wait to hear how everything goes-you and your sisters have put alot of work into this and I hope it goes great for you!! Tons and tons of good luck wishes!!

I am truly amazed by what you and your small group of sisters have accomplished so far! Remember that even if you do events with GPhiB, you can still do COR events on your own!

(At my alma mater, Valparaiso, formal recruitment is now just one week in January, with all sororities having the same kinds of parties at the same time; you can put your own twist on things but if Wednesday is Philanthropy Day, you're expected to do a philanthropy project of some sort, and if Friday is bid night, then that's what all of the seven sororities are doing that night. But in fall, many sororities did COR during the same week, but did their own activities and bid night/time.)

If you do end up with a Panhellenic Council, you will most likely do a Formal Recruitment all together on the same plan, and do COR or informal on your own schedule a number of times per year. Look at things and see if you'd consider this to be Formal Recruitment or informal rush, and then decide whether you want to participate. It may be that the greek council sororities will need to decide which quarter to do Formal, and plan those events *together*, and do COR the other two quarters.

You also may want to designate requirements for recruitment-- when can freshmen be recruited? (At Valpo, it's only second semester, so they can get to know the campus and classes and other organizations before rushing.) Is there a school-wide minimum GPA for potential new members? These are things to consider, and you'll have to work with AP and GPhiB to decide how you want to do it. But that means that you *will* be part of the greek council and the decision-making process.

You may have already decided some of those things; I just read the whole 60-page saga in three hours while doing laundry, so it's hard to remember everything you've gone through already!

-grin- Keep your heads up, get that website together, and get your names out there! It'll take a while, but you *can* do it!

I think you should definately take advantage of the offer from the other two groups. In COR the hardest part is often find the women to come to the events and then getting them to show up. Talk with the greek advisor and with the VP at GPB and see if a compromise can be worked out with what you already have planned for your group and what they are thinking about. Obviously, their plans are not as set since they are just forming.

I am confused on what they are wanting to do though. Would this be a "formal" type of recruitment where there were set days for set events and all women would got to all three groups? Or, is it more that all the groups would be in the same room/area and the girls would just talk to who they wanted to - more like an interest meeting? Or is it something inbetween.

Also, are they asking you to cancel your events completely or to just participate in theirs as well?

I think that you could use this as an opportunity to contact more women. Face it, Gamma Phi may pull them in, but not all the women are going to be interested in them. As you said, your chapters are different types of women so the women not interested in GPB may find the perfect fit with NBO.

I also really like your PR/Recruitment shirt idea. Be sure to get the t-shirts made and have the members out wearing them. You can always do the same shirt in two colors (if the girls want to buy two shirts) and then the could wear one every other week - all on the same day. I think there is great potential for PR with this idea as well for coming quarters COR.

If you would like to PM me - please do. I have served as the regional membership advisor for 6 years for the Texas area (until they changed the volunteer structure) so I have lots of experience with not only formal recruitment but also with COB/COR - large and small schools both.

I must say that is one of the best rush themes I have ever heard!!! GREAT JOB NBO!!!

Other than that, I think that it would be great for you to work with GPB if possible--that way, you will find women with interests similar to yours---interest in an NPC group sorority, but maybe just not the one currently on your campus!

wow, this is an amazing thread

This thread is absolutely incredible. I think it's great what you're doing! it's amazing I hadn't seen this before.

It is also awesome to see how much GreekChat played a role in this. I go to this site a lot for rush ideas, as I am on both the rush and social commities, and am running for Rush chair next semester!

Corina, you're the red-head on the top left. You're pretty hot, if you don't mind me saying so.

The cosmo magazine thing is a sweet rush theme. My Fraternity usually has themes for social events, but not rush events. Like we did Mexican Taco Fiesta or something with Phi Delta Theta, and had a Hawaiin Night with Zeta Tau Alpha. etc etc.

I hope that everything goes well for you and your sisters. Keep up the good work

Corina, you are simply amazing! I've just read roughly 45 pages of your struggle, and am terribly proud of your accomplishments! Do you realize how few women your age would have the stamina you've shown? Frankly, Gamma Phi has to be wondering why in the world they didn't give you a bid in the first place!

Which brings me to my questions:

1) If Gamma Phi is the only NPC sorority on campus, how did they pick their quota?
2) (I did skip about 15-20 pages) Is Alpha Xi Delta the only NPC sorority that showed interest in NBO? Or was there a selection process?
3) Do you realize how awesome this will look on your resume? Not "member, XYZ sorority" but "Started local NBO sorority, colonized it into ABC NPC sorority, Initiated as Founder." THAT, my dear, shows spunk and determination!

BTW, redheads rock!

Please add my encouragement & good wishes to the many other fine Greek women (& men) who have already done so...

Hey Corina
I've been reading this thread more and more and hoped to share some stuff. I attend the Rochester Institute of Technology (You prolly haven't heard of us, despite our rankings among tech schools). ONLY 4% OF STUDENTS HERE ARE GREEK! When you mentioned how few greeks there are on your campus I fealt that I could relate.

It seems you're having the same problems everyone else is having. RUSH! We usually pull in 2 to 6 pledges a quarter (our school's on a quarter system, so we have 3 rush periods rather than two). And these are not uncommon numbers around here. We usualy don't rush with other houses (but we do socials with them a lot). 80% of the people who'll join GLO's are people who were in the "maybe crowd" that were initially intimated of this huge greek system. You meet them individually as friends, and then explain how it all works answering questions along the way. INTRODUCE THEM TO OTHER MEMBERS!! Finally ask them if they would consider joining if they haven't already inquired this themselves. It's a surefire method, and you can weed out the people you don't want along the way.

Hope this helps a bit. And remember, rush is something the whole house has to participate in!

Thumbs up

Awesome recruitment idea! Best of luck to NBO. And if doing a joint rush thing with Gamma Phi doesn't work out this semester, suggest doing it during the spring. That way NBO and GPB (and the other sorority, too, if they want) can plan things together. But I do think it would be a good way to increase participation if all the sororities on campus were involved. Either way, keep us updated!

On an (not wholy) unrelated note, I am just finishing up my grad school applications (and my brain is fried ), and UCSC is my #1 choice. Wish me luck! (Hey, more greeks at UCSC, right?...maybe I can convince Zeta to pick up NBO..... ).

Good luck on finals, everyone!

Similar Thread

There's a thread in the Chapter Operations forum titled lets see how far we get....(not sure how to link to it)..I just stumbled upon it tonight. It's so exciting to read these. I'm glad that people are willing to go through all this in order to get the best greek experience for them, instead of settling for what the campus has to offer and not having as great an experience as they could. I'm new to GC, but this is the first thread that I check when I log on!!
I hope everything is going great, and enjoy your holidays

I admit it....I've been avoiding greekchat. I'm not feeling so happy about how NBO is going and I didn't think I could even handle discussing it. Honestly...I've lost the care that I used to have for it. I know that sounds so simple and abrupt, but it's kinda true. I feel like we put in SO much work, and the end result is that we either remain stagnant or actually deteriorate. We're losing members- girls are either moving back home, going to a community college, or simply not showing up to meetings or anything anymore. What's the point? Here's the thing. Obviously there's no way for us to get what AZD asked for- in large part because we didn't try hard enough, we don't make the effort and I don't know how to be a good leader. I've lost my passion, the drive I used to have has just fizzled out. So I longer have AZD to look forward to...ok, so that's not what a sorority should be all about, the sisterhood we have should be enough. But honestly it's not. We've all lost motivation because it's SO HARD to advance...we can't survive unless we recruit new members, we consistently cannot attract new members, thus...a=b, b=c, a=c. And, while I have an intense desire to be a part of greek life in general, I am so completely unimpressed with other greek organizations at my school, that I have no desire to be a part of UCSC's greek life. So if I know my sorority won't provide me with anything once I graduate, and I don't see what any of us are getting from it now...what's the point? I know this sounds fatalistic and whiny and I'm just giving up but hell, I'm human and I don't think I can hack it anymore. Everything that goes wrong is directly or indirectly my fault- and I don't like that pressure. I'm not a good President, I know this now. I don't have the proper motivation or self dicipline. I feel like this situation with AZD, combined with our completely innefective rush situation, has just delivered several crushing blows that we won't be able to recover from. Sorry if I'm being repetative, I don't even know exactly what I'm thinking or trying to say right now. I know it's stupid to say that I wish it were all easier, but I do. I wish we could get a break...I wish the other organizations on campus were nicer, I wish that we had the strength to accomplish our goals, I wish I wasn't so whiny right now...sorry I'm subjecting you all to this, I just don't even know what to think or say anymore.
-Corina
