Obviously, though, California is a huge state, so other chapters can be "around" without being "right next door." It is nice to have chapters close enough for road trips, etc.

Such is the case with the AXiD chapters she listed. If an alumnae from Northridge now lives in/near Santa Cruz....I rreeeaallllyy doubt she's going to want to make the mega 10-hour drive to help out with recruitment.

In my opinion, five chapters for the whole state of California isn't that many. The only two that are relatively "near" UCSC are the Stanislas and Sonoma State chapters.

I dunno if you've already looked into it but Alpha Chi Omega has a huge prescence in Cali and it's a very strong organization nationally. I really think that you should look into Alpha Chi, if only to just see what they're about...plus you can PM me if you wanna know anything. I've been real involved in my chapter and I've had the chance to work with our nationals on several occasions. -Jill

So here's the newest gossip from my school...Alpha Psi (local org on campus) has deciced to invite Alpha Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma to campus. Those are both great organizations, but it makes me nervous because neither of those organizations have sent any information to my school or expressed interest in Alpha Psi from what I know. So if they don't show up, and Alpha Psi still wants to go national, they're basically going to be competition for the two organizations that we're inviting to campus. It's a little disconcerning. But, we've decided, after careful thought regarding alumni and collegiate chapters, creeds, purposes, missions, goals, traditions, founding principles, etc etc etc, to invite back these two groups: Alpha Xi Delta and Sigma Sigma Sigma! I'm very excited, those were my top two picks out of the organizations that sent info to UCSC, and hopefully things will work out! I will of course keep you posted...I'm also excited because tonight we made huge posters to put up at the bookstore, and a couple others for some of the dining halls on campus. And, we got a call from Alpha Psi to do some sort of event with them, and we have rush (recruitment, sorry) events planned with Pi Alpha Phi (one of the Asian interest frats on campus) and Delta Omega Chi (local multicultural frat). Also, Theta Chi (the only inter/national frat on campus) called us last night and we're planning a social with them, and tomorrow we're going to set up an information table with them to raise interest for NBO and Theta Chi! Very exciting huh? Tonight was really productive and we had alot of fun also...it was nice, just us having fun as sisters and not stressing about political crap. Nights like this one remind me that we are indeed a great group of women, who all love eachother, sometimes we just get so caught up in the details I guess. I'm in a good mood, in case you can't tell! Oh, and as for AXO...I'm actually sort of partial to them myself, but we've decided it would be best to go with organizations that have already expressed interest in UCSC. We just think it would be a little more of a possible sure thing. But thank you for considering us worthy of being your sisters AXWhoah! Ok, more later...please feel free to comment!

Ouch! Stop saying frat....A lot of people cringe when you say that!

Anyway, I am happy that you made a decision and I am sure that everything will go well. Keep us posted. When are AZD and SSS coming to see you?

I can't say frat? I had no idea. Sorry! We don't know yet when they're coming to visit, we have to schedule around them I believe. Why not "frat"? Greek speak is so complicated these days!

It sounds like everything is going well for you! Good relations with fraternities is probably the #1 best thing you can do toward recruiting more members.

It's possible that if neither of the chapters Alpha Psi wants are willing to come, they will compete for Tri-Sigma or AXD, but it's also possible that they will say, "No, we'd rather wait for what we really want." Plus, too, the fact that you requested AXD and Tri-Sigma and Alpha Psi didn't will probably give you an edge in those Nationals' minds.

No matter what happens, both AXD and Tri-Sigma are really great orgs, and if you end up with either of them, you should have a fantastic Greek experience. I don't know how many groups you can invite, but if you want to throw a third group in there, you could afford to ask a group that hasn't already expressed interest.

Hey Corina,

Many fraternity members consider it an insult to be called "frat" boys or "frat" members. It is viewed as a negative term that brings to mind Animal House and the immaturity depicted in it.

Hope this clarifies a little for you. (Quite honestly, we always called them "frat guys" when I was in school, and no one seemed to mind. However, times have changed and I can understand the negative connotation that sometimes comes with the word.)

Have a great Friday!

Hi Corina,
The ladies are right when they don't say the word "frat"...it has a bit of a negative connotation to it and harkens back to Animal House type of images. Use the full word "fraternity".

Also, I wanted to point out that many NPC groups are referred to as "fraternities", even though their membership is women.
For example, Alpha Xi Delta is Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity, Chi Omega is Chi Omega Fraternity, but Gamma Phi Beta is Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. If you and the ladies of NBO can be careful to use the correct terminolgy, it will be that much more impressive to the Officers of the NPC groups when you meet them; it will demonstate that you know your stuff and are sincere about affiliating with an NPC. And why are these "sororities" called fraternities, you ask? Here is the explanation:
At the time of the founding of most of the older women's fraternities, the Greek derivative phratres of phratria, meaning tribes or groups of people with similar interests and backgrounds, was the basis for the title, fraternity. No doubt, because the women's organizations were modeled in many ways after the older men's groups, the women simply used the title fraternity, too.

I also wanted to mention that many people do use the layman's term "actives" to refer to collegiate members.
In the eyes of NPC groups, this is considered incorrect . Instead use "collegians" to refer to collegiate members. So a sorority or a [women's] fraternity is comprised of "collegians" and "alumnae". I don't think it hurts to adopt the official Panhellenic terminology right away....

Who is a Fraternity and who is a Sorority?
Here are all the NPC groups:

No, I am not saying you should memorize all 26, but it *is* good to memorize the 4 who ARE interested in colonizing at UCSC. If you ever forget, you can check back here or look at their homepage.

Alpha Chi Omega Fraternity
Alpha Delta Pi Sorority -this was kindly pointed out to me by an ADPi member! Thank you!
Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority
Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity
Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity
Alpha Phi Fraternity
Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority
Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority
Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity
Chi Omega Fraternity
Delta Delta Delta Fraternity
Delta Gamma Fraternity
Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority
Delta Zeta Sorority
Gamma Phi Beta Sorority
Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity
Kappa Delta Sorority
Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity
Phi Mu Fraternity
Phi Sigma Sigma Fraternity
Pi Beta Phi Fraternity
Sigma Delta Tau Fraternity-now confirmed
Sigma Kappa Sorority
Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority
Theta Phi Alpha Fraternity
Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity

Also, I wanted to point out that the NPC Recruitment Terminolgy can be found here. All NPC groups have unanimously adopted this terminology (even though it is a DG webpage). When you are conversing with the ladies of the prospective groups, definitely use the official NPC terminology, it will sound more professional, more classy and will be more impressive in general.
I think you already know to use the word "recruitment" instead of "rush", so you are off to a good start. Good Luck!

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for the info! I already knew some of the stuff, like about which groups were fraternities and which were sororities (I just tend to slip when I'm in casual context and not thinking ) but some of the other stuff, like what to refer to collegiate members and about fraternities, was new to me. This is all definitely usefull information that we'll be sure to incorporate into our meetings with the groups. We had a Greek Council meeting today, and we planned the first ever Greek Week at UCSC. It sounds like so much fun! Also, I spoke with someone from Alpha Psi and they said that Alpha Phi has contacted my campus (I'm so confused!). But the important thing is that we basically made an agreement not to infringe on the organizations that the other sorority has their heart set on. So basically, they're not interested in Alpha Xi Delta or Tri Sigma, and we're not going to make advances on Alpha Phi or Kappa Kappa Gamma. I feel a little better about that. I'll keep you all posted!

Corina,
Happy to help out...this is new to you, so how were you supposed to know?

Another quick thing I wanted to mention and that is the alum terms that people sometimes get mixed up on......

Woman singular: alumna
Women plural: alumnae

Man singular: alumnus
Men plural: alumni

Men and women together: alumni

Corina,
I'm so excited!!! This is so awesome that you are inviting Tri Sigma! (just an fyi for anyone out there...since we're getting technical, it's just Tri Sigma, or Sigma or Sigma Sigma Sigma...never Tri Sig, and no dashes)

Corina, I sure hope we do come and if so it's in my region so I would be asked to come present. I'm so thrilled about possibly getting to meet you.

Have a wonderful Easter!

I was just reading some previous posts in this thread. I want to point out how much progress you have made in only six months. You were a disappointed rushees without a bid on 9/27/01, and now you are a founding sister and president of a local chapter. I am very impressed! I know that many NPC sororities will be impressed with your initiative and hard work also. You get a big thumbs up from me!

Thank you so much! It's hard for me to remember sometimes how much progress has been made, both individually and as a sorority. It makes me feel so good to know that other people have noticed also. I'm very nervous about this whole thing but I'm so excited also...ultimately this is going to be such a great experience for us, no matter how it turns out right? I will certainly keep you posted!
