In our suite, we actually have this ancient copy of a Pitt student organization handbook, which has tons of pictures of Greek Organizations in it. It's from about 1968, and at that point, the only sororities other than the 11 we have now were Phi Sigma Sigma and Kappa Alpha Theta. I'm guessing Phi Sig must have gone inactive sometime within the 70's...
As for expanding on our campus, we cannot do so yet, as over half of our sororities remain under quota, be it by 40 spots, or by 4. It all comes down to interest I guess...
Does anyone have any other interesting Pitt Greek stories? Anyone know where their chapters were located before moving into Amos/McCormick or the Hill?

Shelby here from Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc.. We're the newest sorority to come to campus in a decade and we're just hoping for some support. I know that I have always supported all of the Greeks even before I came one.

And i'll try to find out about getting the webpage up. One of my sisters is current Panhell President and i spoke to her at length about ideas. I also think that one of my sisters applied to be webmaster at the end of the year. Next time i see one of them online i'll ask what's up. This is vital for recruitment!

I was in Pittsburgh last week! My boyfriend lives nearby so I went to visit. We tried to drive to Primantis but many of the roads are under construction so we went to the arts festival down by the point and ate there. We also went up the big hill (can't remember the name!) to see the view from up there.

Phi Sigma Sigma was on the 6th floor of Amos Hall, but had less than 10 sisters aroung 1974. Tri-Sigma colonized right afterwards. Delta Phi Epsilon was down to about 6 members when Kappa Delta colonized. There seems to be a cap on how many sororities are capable of being on Pitt campus at the same time, although I have to admit that I was terribly fascinated by seeing that Phi Mu was once at Pitt!
The ADPi house was on Bigelow Blvd, between the same streets as the Holiday Inn. As pledges, we had to go find the driveway and there are still pieces of furniture in the ADPi suite that were in the house which are somewhat "revered".

Mt. Washington. Did you get to ride the incline?
Shelby, congratulations and best of luck with Theta Nu Xi!!!

What are the best bars in the burgh for a 21st Birthday? I finally turn 21 Tuesday and I'm looking for bars that do something special.
My friend went to Have a Nice Day Cafe and they let all her friends in for free gave her free drinks, a gift certificate for another time, and a happy hour for her and her friends. (They only do this on Saturdays, so I can't partake) I'm looking for stuff like this so that my friends have a good time but dont have to spend an arm and a leg.
So impart your wisdom and let me know the best places to go.
On a side note:
What are some cool things you or your friends did or had on your 21st? My friends are having me write down every shot and where i took it but that's a little too much work for me. Any Ideas?
|
Enjoy your 21st birthday! I wish I had some suggestions for you, but the Oakland bar scene is just about unrecognizable from when I was at Pitt (1985-1989). I spent my 21st birthday surrounded by my sisters in the back booth of Mitchell's; THE greek hangout back then. If it's still there, it's on Center Avenue and I doubt anyone would want to go there because it's gotten pretty scary down that way

Yes! MT Washington!...I thought that was the name but I wasn't positive. We didn't take the incline, we just drove up then back down (to the dismay of my poor car).

Just wanted to mention that Phi Sigma Rho Sorority started its Zeta chapter at Pitt in 2000. They now have around 30 sisters in the chapter!

Are you a part of Pan-Hel? Or any other council? Are you recognized by Pitt? I haven't seen you guys anywhere. Do you have to be an engineer to be in your sorority?
P.s.- I'm not trying to be catty, I'm just asking.

I'd also like to hear more about you guys. I graduated in 2002 (i'm still on campus though- at the law school, and I'm a very active alumna), and only remember hearing about your group very briefly when it came to campus. I believe you had looked to affiliate with Panhel, but we couldn't admit the group b/c you only admit engineering women and that was seen as sort of a "discrimination"- nothing aganist your group, but that just goes against Panhel rules. At least that's what I remember from exec board meetings- I wasn't panhel rep (i was treasurer, yuck), but I remember that's what our panhel rep and pres told us. I hadn't heard about your group again since then. I'd imagine for the same reasons why it's hard to come across engineers in general- you all live in Benedum!
Question for Theta Nu Xi- do you have any plans/interest in affiliating with Panhel in any way? It would be great to have another group for greek week events, etc., but then looking at it from your standpoint, it's a whole lot of BS to deal with (and expenses).
For both Theta Nu Xi and Phi Sigma Rho- are chapters of your group on other campuses affiliated with panhel?
I'd love to learn more about both groups!

Okay, I'll answer your question as best as I can. Some of our other chapters are affiliated with Pan-Hel but it's not the same because I THINK they don't have any of the rights the other sororities in the council have. That's all I can say on that right now. In this time you have to be careful with what is secret, but what I just told you isn't. If any of my sisters out there know better than me, you should post!!
From what I know about my colony is that there are no plans to join Pan-Hel. But it doesn't mean we wouldn't love to do an event with you guys!!! We support all Greeks on campus, and in the future we hope you will support us. And I'm not being fake, I mean it!!!

That's great to hear.
I'll be seeing the President and VP of PR from the KD chapter later this week at the KD National Convention, and I will suggest to them the idea of doing an event with TNX. I know they're always looking for new ideas for programming and outreach, and this would be a great opportunity for each group to learn about each other.
