Ladies, I thought that I was the only one that get's embarassed by these types of things.
Anyway, I am from Ohio, and we have a commercial for gold teeth!!!! Can you believe that! It's crazy. They are on a street corner in of course one of the "worst" areas that you can possibly think of, and this guy comes on in front of the camera and grits his teeth for everyone to see. I turn the channel everytime I see it!

All the people who have the "project mentality" have it for a reason and it may not be because they want to have it. Nobody wants to be poor, or live in a project, etc. but there are certain cultural and hisrotical forces that put us in certain situations mixed with our own actions. I think that most of the people we are talking about though are college educated people, who work at our jobs and such--I don't think they would be considered the "niggas" though. They may act out because of other reasons. I don't like the way Chris Rock is ready to cast the "undesirable people" to the side to make way for the good "civilized" people. That's how I read that statement and it definately rubs me to wrong way.

Cleopatrajones, I have to disagree with you. Not all people that act out with a "project mentality" are suffering from some unseen or overwhelming oppression. Some people are just ghetto! I also have to dispute the statement that no one wants to live in the project. I know people that love to live in the project and will take NOTHING to leave. You can offer them $3 million and they will turn it down in exchange for keeping their apartment. Some of them are ghetto as hell and know nothing more. Others know and have means to get out, but they don't. That's just how it is.
Are there "niggas" in our society? YES. Are we wrong for acknowledging such? NO. No one should be cast off because they don't meet this high standard that we set for our race. However, regardless of how much we try to ignore or deny it, everyone has the means to step up and have that stigma removed.
P.S. to flyygyrl1908, we have a commercial like that down here. The place is called "Slugs for Thugs." (down here, gold teeth are called slugs) You can get 2 slugs for $175. All these guys get the camera and show off their slugs. It is SCARY!

Lovelyivy84, I agree with Chris Rock 1913%. In the African-American community, there ARE two sets of people: Blacks and Niggas. It's totally embarassing. I absolutely can not STAND an ignorant, loud-talking NIGGA. It's sad to say, but it's true. One of my peeves is the awards shows, yes the AWARDS SHOWS. It may sound trivial, but it's true. I hate seeing people like JaRule, Dre from Outkast, and a lot of others get up there and act, talk, and look like FOOLS. YEAH, YEAH!! WORD!!! KNOW WHAT I'M SAYIN'!!!! PEACE!!!! YA HEARD!!!! FOR REAL!!! KEEPIN' IT REAL!!! The grabbing of the crouch. The hats on in the building. The gangsta-gangsta outfits. The fifty-million gold teeth. The gang signs (you know, with the fingers). YADDA, YADDA, YADDA!!! I just get sick and tired of seeing that mess. Can we all atleast ACT like we have some decent and respectable home training????
Just by looking and listening to them, one would NEVER even THINK that they were MILLIONAIRES or even from very respectable backgrounds. IT'S A SHAME!!!

Sister Greek korkscru, thank you for this post. This ill-behaviour that some of us show is disappointing and retromingent.
Many people, however, don't have good home training and just don't care.
I thank God every day that I had good home training and parents who taught me what's right. And frankly, I'm happy to be middle-class with a college degree and NOT have kids I can't take care of properly. It's called personal responsibility, people.
I am just so tired of those who think acting and living like a n@&&$ is something to be proud of.

The first time I heard that Chris Rock quote I could not have agreed more with it. And on some level I still do.
But a lot of it also seems to be subject to some sort of middle class morality- how properly you speak, clothes that are not too flamboyant, not talking too loud, don't gesture too much, etc. And some of those behaviors are related to class.
I guess I just am very leery of some sort of definition of black folks and niggas that comes down to economic standards- things you pick up in the ghetto can be survival tactics, not particularly appropriate in middle class company, but ingrained behaviors- like being cheap, lol.

And I agree with you Lovelyivy84. HOWEVER, I see it like this. I'M from the ghetto (and the SOUTH at that). So, it's not like I don't know. It's all about what YOU want for yourself. It's all about the standards that you set for YOURSELF. It's all about SELF IMAGE. I don't believe that saying "You can take the person out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the person". THAT'S BOGUS!!! Heck, we've STILL got people in this world who EXPECT all Black people to act, look, and talk like plum idiots. What good does it do for Blacks to play into this warped type of thinking? My question is what are they trying to prove? Who are they trying to impress or intimidate? What's the reason for this mess? I just don't get it. If someone could VALIDATE that kind of behavior, then maybe I'd be more inclined to understand it. I can understand the survival tactic reasoning. But this behavior CONTINUES even AFTER some have obtained wealth, education, and fame. I mean, many of them HAVETO know that much of their behaviors are just not APPROPRIATE in ANY community be it African-American, Caucasian, Chinese, or whatever. I just can't see the reasoning behind it. How long are people going to use their disadvantaged, dsyfunctional backgrounds as EXCUSES for straight NIGGA BEHAVIOR???? It just makes NO sense to me.

Okay, here's my two cents.
First of all, a few months ago, a store for getting gold teeth opened up in the mall I work in. I was walking past it, and my jaw dropped. Right then, an older white woman said to me, 'What were they thinking? That's disgusting!' I told her that I had no idea. But at the same time I wanted to ask her 'Who is 'they'?
Another incident was today when I was watching the local news. Sometimes school children visit the station and the station crew films them at the end of the broadcast. Anyways, today they had some kids from a local middle school visting the station. Why is it that 3 of the kids threw up gang signs at the camera?

Oh my goodness, Hyperbeauty!!! That's just plain ole IGNANT!!!! Speaking of children and being embarassed, I just thought of yet ANOTHER thing that I can't STAND to see. Hows about children, whose mothers are together (meaning hair done, clothes straight, etc.), yet the children look like they are from Rowanda, Cambodia, or some place like that. I see it ALL of the time y'all. The children run around with dirty, mismatched, tatered clothing. Their heads are straight up PEEZY, noses running, faces (along with the REST of their bodies) dirty. And to top it all off, they have first-hand knowledge AND experience in being disrespectful, they call their mothers (AND grandmothers and anyone else) by their FIRST names. They cuss like sailors, and FIGHT all of the dag-gone time. The BABIES have on NOTHING except a dirty-rump diaper that needs to be changed and their hair is either NOT done or HALF done. One thing that is even MORE embarassing than this scenario is when the parents, specifically the MOTHERS, look and act the same way. Can we say complete NIGGAROSITY (and I know that there's no such word)??????? This kind of mess is just plain ole' NASTY and TOTALLY embarassing in ANY community. Yet, I've noticed it to be prevelant in the low-income African-American community.
BUT FOR THE GRACE AND MERCY OF GOD Y'ALL...!!!!! BUT FOR THE GRACE AND MERCY OF GOD...!!!!!!!!

I was on BP's website(name abbreviated on purpose) and I was browsing through personal pages.I came across one page of this guy who had the bling bling thug portrayed on his page.He even had the GALL to feature his child holding a stack of money.Underneath that it said "they gotta start early". I was so disgusted I wanted to alert BP and have his page removed.

For those of you who live in NYC - did any of you catch the commercial from BQE Auto Auction? The guy they picked could not have been an actor, rather someone straight off the streets who just purchased a car from the auction. When he said "Yo, stop playing kid....." I was like WTF???? Surely they could've found someone else to do the stupid commercial

N*****osity.
CTFU. CTFU. CTFU.
I'm beyond entertained on this one, even though I generally avoid usage of any word that has the N connotation.

Here in Philadelphia, mass transit runs a series of trains that go to the suburbs. Most of the people who ride those trains are working, middle aged white people. There's really not that much talking going on because people are just trying to get to and from work. There aren't that many young black people riding these trains. Actually, there aren't really that many black people of any age on these trains.
Okay, so one day I was riding the train to work. These two young black girls go on, they were about twenty two or so. So, the one girl starts talking all loud about the date she had last night while her boyfriend was at work. "Girrrll, you know I had a date with Fathead last night. We went out to dinner and then back to his place. He was tryin' to hit it but I knew I couldn't because Man Man always likes to get some when he gets off in the morning. But, I knew Fathead wouldn't be tryin to take no for an answer after he just spent fifty dollars on dinner. So I told him that it was my time of the month and then, I ran in the bathroom and used my emergency tampon. Girl, that mess hurt cuz I was all dry."
Please keep in mind that it was about 7:00 in the morning and me and the two females were the only black people in the car. They were so loud that everyone in the car heard the entire conversation. I just wanted to slap the taste out of their mouths.
