I recently finished White Oleander (haven't seen the movie) and it was just soooo depressing. It was well written but sad.
When I first started reading this thread I immediately thought of White Oleander. It is disturbing in a The Bell Jar kind of way. I loved the book, but I had to stop reading about 2/3 through because it was giving me panic attacks. It was just not a good time in my life to be reading that book. The movie is good but not nearly as intense as the book.

I read A Handmaid's Tale and thought it was great. It was a little disturbing because I kept trying to figure out where it was set and what year.

I remember reading Animal Farm in 7th grade and being really disturbed when they shipped the horse off to the glue factory. "All animals are created equal, some are just more equal than others."

you don't want to see the movie. it's terrible compared to the book, which I absolutely love.

one book that I haven't read yet but have been meaning to is Dark Shamans by Neal Whitehead. I met him when he spoke at a seminar, and I've heard that his students have vomited in class and had nightmares from the book...curiousness...
(I'm in a class called Representations of the Amazon, which is where I first heard about it)

Probably a book on Josef Mengele (the Auchwitz Angel of Death). Once I read the kind of medical experiments he did on people and to the extent he did it, I just didnt think people were capable of doing such things.

The Giver by Lois Lowry traumatized me in Middle School

I tried to start The Dante Club this year but its too gory and gross.

Whoever mentioned the Strong-Willed Child, my parents bought that to try to deal with me but as far as they could tell it only made me more stubborn

I wondered if anyone would mention this one! I read in GRADUATE SCHOOL (for an independent study in adolescent literature, and it still had a profound effect on me. I loved it and was freaked out at the same time.
