I don’t remember “the claw”. It may have gone by another name. Here is a picture of Hair Bear. He’s the one with the perm.

OK, I couldn't get the image to post so here is the link. http://www.tvacres.com/bears_cartoon_hair.htm

Here are pictures of big 80’s hair.

"The claw" is achieved by having bangs that are at least 2-3 inches long, and curling them under with e curling iron, but before releasing the iron, hair spray the curl in place so that only the end is curled under, and the vertical rise of the bang from root to curl is the full, erect, 2-3 inch height.

We called that Mall Bangs. You had to separate your bangs into layers, the top one you sprayed with aqua net before curling, while on the curling iron and afterward. It went up and back. The middle layers were curled much more tightly and stayed in the middle and the bottom layer went down flat and curled under. All the aquanet in the world didn't hold my hair though...I used to swear trying to do my bangs.

I was never able to achieve the claw, which was a source of agony then, and relief now.

There's a girl working in my building with the claw. It's very scary. Even here, the land of the mullet, her hair is out of control.

I work with a few women who still belive the claw is popular. Of course I am a teacher, some of these women start teaching and never ever update their wardrobe. My gosh, we aren't paid that badly! I wish I had some pictures!

I like her hair. I had her hair. I rocked the bubble skirts also. I wish that I had some pictures on my computer to show you.

Just so you understand, her hair is NOT the claw. Think Tonya Harding, the ice skater. She had some serious claw going.

When I was in grad school at North Texas, there was a certain sorority that ALL had those mall bangs. We used to point out girls who had their bangs "all moussed up like the XYZs."

I grew up in Queens so I have seen the claw up close, but we didn't call it that. You would freak if you saw the pictures in my sister's high school yearbook. They had huge hair. I really need a scanner.

I went home and checked by copy of Baird's (the most recent edition (1993?) and that listed them as having those dates. However the AEPhi National website says the Carnegie-Mellon chapter was founded November 21, 1943.

I think the source that we want is the 1944 Carnegie-Mellon Yearbook.

I didn't know what a bubble skirt was, but I was just reading December's Lucky and there's two pages on how to wear a bubble skirt. Is this what you were talking about? It looks like it folds underneath somehow. Page 264. Maybe it is coming back?

Thanks for making us feel ancient! From the Nordstrom's site it looks like maybe they are bringing bubble skirts back in some form.
