OT to the sad boat story, but kind of related to the 'baby' sub-thread is the etymology of 'chick' which is so prevalent now and might be of interest to some.
Years ago in Ireland (Dublin really) and then England, women were known as birds. Young women then became known as chicks. New Flight Attendants on Aer Lingus were called chicks too.
Bird never really made it across the Atlantic, but chick surely has.

Interesante. What is the reason behind those origins?
BTW, I just spent a long time looking at the great photos on that website in your signature. Cool then and now photos. I also liked seeing the Order of Diana stuff.

My Dublin informant didn't know the origins of 'bird', he just knew that it was in common use by the 1950's in Dublin and then England and that 'chick' was derived from it. Much as ree-Xi said of herself, my friend gave the impression that it was not derogatory. I got the impression that 'bird' denoted the 'new' woman after WWII, as opposed to their old fashion mothers.

I actually use the word "chick" on a regular basis, but usually only when I am in familiar company. It rarely has a negative connotation, except when I refer to someone as "that chick who walked right into me bc she was on her cell and not paying attention".
Some women hate it, but I don't mind it in friendly conversation.

Many other Tri Delta chapters use the terms new Deltas, new sisters, newest members or pearls. I have lived many places in the U.S. and never heard the term "baby Deltas" until I saw the reference posted on this forum.

Oh definitely, I didn't mean that we never use phrases like pearls or new members, just that delta babies doesn't have any negative connotations for us. All of them are widely used at Knox

Taking statements from FORUM POSTINGS? Did the reporter attend the same school where it's okay to conduct research for academic papers on forums?
This is a campus publication, correct? Is it an "alternative" news "source"? Even college newspapers have standards and protocol in obtaining statements, whether it's a credentialed witness, anonymous informant, or "man on the street". The reporter's job is to establish context of the person and statement. Taking a random post somewhere is irresponsible "reporting". (I majored in English/Journalism)
Sigh.

the article also states the the DG president did not return phone calls or text messages.
I write for my school's newspaper and I am definitely going to send this to my Hurricane friends, they will get a kick out of this
