Vandross' Mom Says Son Was Overeating
1 hour, 27 minutes ago

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer

NEW YORK - In the days before he suffered a stroke, Luther Vandross (news) couldn't stop overeating, according to his mother.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Mary Vandross also blamed her son's hectic schedule for his April 16 stroke.

"He just worked himself to where he is right now," said Mrs. Vandross, 80.

Vandross has been semiconscious since suffering the stroke in his Manhattan home. He had been putting the finishing touches on his new album, "Dance With My Father," which hits stores Tuesday.

Vandross' fluctuations in weight have become famous over the years.

"He had regained his weight back, and that of course really bothered me tremendously, because I knew how hard he was struggling not to gain the weight," said Mrs. Vandross. "And yet he would eat uncontrollably."

A few days before his stroke, Vandross, 52, visited his mother in her Philadelphia home. Although the visit was a good one, she worried about him because he was "eating everything in sight."

"I asked him, `Are you upset about something?' He said, `I don't know, but ... when you go to your mama's house, you're supposed to eat,'" she said.

One time, Mrs. Vandross said, "I got annoyed, and I asked him, `Why do you do this to yourself again?' And he said, `I don't drink, I've never drank, I've never smoked, I've never done drugs.'

"He said, `Mama, I just don't know what to do anymore.'"

She visits him in the hospital often. If she is not there, another relative or friend is by his bedside.

During the day, he is shown photos of family and friends, and someone reads him the get-well cards and e-mails that have been pouring in. He also hears music by his favorite singers — Aretha Franklin (news), Diana Ross (news) and Dionne Warwick (news). His background singers have even come in to perform for him, said Max Szadek, his personal assistant.

Those closest to him say his condition has improved. Earlier on, he contracted pneumonia and needed a tracheotomy to help him breathe.

But now, he has begun mouthing words, even trying to eat a bit of an orange. Mrs. Vandross recalled that recently, she arrived in his hospital room and his head was turned. When she called him, he turned his head toward her and smiled, and she burst into tears.

Szadek noted that Vandross has started to move his neck around.

He's even aware of the growing success of his new single, the title track of the album. Szadek said he showed Vandross a copy of the music industry trade publication Billboard that included the single, and Vandross followed along with his eyes.

"He's doing excellent now in comparison to what he was," said Mrs. Vandross.

To God Be The Glory!!!

Although his journey isn't over yet.....I'm SO VERY HAPPY to hear of his improvement.

Luther's improvement was reported last night on UPN 9 News. My eyes swelled with tears. After I read the article above, the tears rolled down my cheek.

I can not even imagine the feeling Mother Vandross must have felt when she called her son's name and he turned and looked at her.

I'm will continue to pray for him and will be picking up his CD on Tuesday, June 10th.

Vandross Coma Breakthrough
Thu Jun 5, 6:20 PM ET Add Entertainment - E! Online to My Yahoo!

By Joal Ryan

Luther Vandross can't sing. And he can't speak. But first things first: The R&B crooner is showing signs of emerging from a stroke-induced coma.

"He's tracking. There are moments when he's alert, when he can actually shake his head 'yes' or 'no,' " Carmen Romano, the entertainer's business manager, said Thursday.

Romano called the activity "the first signs of awareness" since Vandross was found unconscious in his Manhattan apartment April 16.

Vandross, 52, remains in the intensive care unit of New York's Weill Cornell Medical Center, listed in critical but stable condition.

The hospital would not comment Thursday on Vandross' condition beyond the "critical, but stable" designation. Previously, the singer had been referred to as a "minimally responsive" patient.

That began to change one week ago Thursday--May 29, Romano said.

As a larger-than-usual contingent of well-wishers, including band members, looked on, Vandross opened his eyes. And, though he'd been doing that for weeks, there was something different.

"That night his awareness level jumped," Max Szadek, a Vandross assistant, tells People magazine. "He started turning his head more, responding with nods."

Romano, who was not present for Vandross' breakthrough, called the development "big." "I flew to New York when I heard this because this was major," the New Jersey-based manager said.

Still, there is a long road ahead for the singer. Vandross does not know what happened to him. Nor does he know his new album, Dance with My Father, with the title track dedicated to the parent he lost at age seven, is due out Tuesday.

He still requires a respirator. And he's not really, totally awake yet. Moments when Vandross is conscious "are fleeting moments," Romano said.

There is no timetable for his release from the ICU. "There is just no way for anybody to predict," Romano said.

During his hospitalization, Vandross has battled meningitis and pneumonia, the latter of which prompted doctors to perform a tracheotomy. The three-time Grammy winner's vocal cords were said to be unharmed by the procedure. (He won't be able to speak, however, until he's off the respirator.)

Through it all, his mother, Mary Vandross, has kept a hospital vigil for her lone surviving child, playing his own music for him at his bedside.

"Luther is going to be just fine," Mary Vandross told the Associated Press this week. "This is God's way of saying, 'You're tired.' "

Vandross' hits include "Here and Now" and "Always and Forever."

I heard "Lovely Day" (w/Busta) on the radio this weekend. I'm not feeling it. I guess, I love Bill Withers' version too much.

I do like the title track.

Yeah and Kirk Franklin has a version of it too.

Overall the CD is a really nice one.
