I was wondering about LSU- if you don't mind answering this, what are the "personalities" of the sororities there? Which are the hardest to get into? It is such a shock to hear about how competitive rush is in the south.

I WANT THAT BOOK! Being a real Southern Belle (ha ha ha) and being here in RI is getting hard...I need to brush up on my skills! I know Kappa is big everywhere.

Here's a question to those who are "in the know": since UT is so big, with a huge Greek system, are there many houses that don't make quota? For example, I know the AXO chapter is HUGE at UT, but it's not considered one of the "Big 6".

As a Southern belle from Georgia, believe me when I say the "Why Princess Margaret Will Never Be A Kappa Kappa Gamma" book is priceless, hilarious, and SO true!

I just love this topic. as someone who pledged at georgia and now attends ole miss i totally relate.
at the high school rush isn't just when you go off to college. it basically starts when you enter high school. there are all sorts of social clubs and stuff that you have to be asked to be in, and you really need these for college rush (if you want to get into a chapter that lots of older girls from our school are in). then the senior year gets very intense. every year girls will go to visit a college for the weekend and do something to embarrass themselves, and this not only messes them up for rush at their own school but for pretty much any state schools they would be going to. in the spring of your senior year your mother will call all her friends from the junior league, etc. to let them know what school you will be attending, so people will start to offer to write recs and letters for you. (for some houses i had over 30 rec/letters).
then it gets worse. the summer before i went to school i went to atlanta to get my "rush clothes". the week of rush my mom stayed in a hotel the entire week, so that she could check my outfits each day and talk to the alums in my hometown to let them know which houses i really liked or whatever.
i assume rush works pretty much the same way at most sec schools, at least that is what i have been told. i've also always heard that texas, ole miss, and georgia are the 3 hardest rushes.
hope don't find this too confusing, thought it might be insightful.

You aren't kidding about UGa rush. Some of the very sharpest kids from my daughter's high school just rushed at UGA last fall--they had looks, perfect grades, fabulous activities, everything a sorority could want, and yet I got an e-mail from one that said if she had it to do again she wouldn't; it was a mob scene and a lot of the sororities there had obviously chosen who they wanted before rush even started. These 2 girls ended up pledging what you'd consider "medium" sororities and boy, did some sororities lose a couple of fabulous girls when they cut these 2.

Question

I might sound stupid for asking this question but I'm a South Florida girl (meaning that I'm pretty much a yankee ). What is Junior League? Is it like a sorority for women after they graduate college?

...that's too bad! Some of the most hard-working, intelligent, beautiful women I know at OU are engineering majors, and are greek. And no, they're not all my Sisters, either. They are affiliated with NPC as well as NPHC organizations.

It's my observations that many greek women (men, too)majoring in engineering are ultimately less involved in their sororities (fraternities) after their first year and half of involvement. And it's not because the house schedule is too much to keep up with - it's more that sisters (brothers) lack understanding about just how time-consuming an engineering undergraduate degree can be. C'mon - is that what fraternal bonds are supposed to be about??

Of course, I will admit bias, being an engineering major myself.

Well, my boyfriend is an EE major, so I have no problem with Engineers. I love them .

I know of one girl that is a Tri-Delt and an EE major, and one Theta that is in EE. But most of the sorority girls here are in the Business college, or are in the Arts and Sciences and Education majors that are traditionally easier. They want high GPAs, at any cost, I guess. Even if it means they have all general studies majors. *shrug*

What I find really cool is that most greek women in the OU College of Engineering have stellar GPAs. Just to shine a light on this year's graduating chemical engineering students, there are 7 greek women (total of 13 women, out of a class of 43), and all have above a 3.0. 6 of the 7 have above a 3.5. All are extremely involved in campus life. All received excellent job offers during the recruiting season.

And just so y'all can be proud of your sisters & sorors , these ladies are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Gamma, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Theta...and (saving the best for last)...Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies!
