Yes, but he _WAS_ an Okie, he moved to California. And he didn't really understand what it meant, he never read the Grapes of Wrath. Read the book and then you will understand why I take such great offense to the term. Look at how the Joad family reacts to being called Okies...

And btw, he wasn't from Muskogee, I'm not even sure if Merle Haggard was an Oklahoman. I know that three of his exes were.

And my father, who's Dad was a Marine, when they were stationed in Claifornia when he was a kid, learned first hand that the term Okie is derogatory. As the kids would shout it along with other curse words when starting fights, and this was during the 1950s. People out there still use it as an insult.

So, you can call other people it, but believe me, calling me an Okie is a good way to get punched in the teeth. Besides, Texans were originally called Texicans, denoting that they were once part of Mexico, want me to call you that from now on?

I don't see how this would be an insult or derogatory, unless you were trying to say something about Mexicans. Are you? I'm the only "Mexican" GC'er representing SATX, so it would be a direct insult to me, not to the other GC'ers you are trying to insult. Perhaps you should consider choosing another choice phrase, as to not insult the wrong person.

Taken from my original post in this thread:

I don't think that it is an insult, however, some Texans do, and therefore I don't call them that. It, unlike the term Okie, was not orginally meant as an insult, there are many people who still use the term proudly. But, if you ask an Oklahoman who knows their history, which sadly, many in our state don't, they will tell you that you never call someone that unless you mean to start a fight.

Wow. How did we get off on derogatory terms and of all things, Oklahoma?

I'm curious-does someone really cite the existence of a special edition Ford F-150 as a reason to be a Proud Texan? I'm shocked...but then, I come from Chevy truck people....

I don't think being called a Texican is an insult, and I'd venture to guess many Texans might react with confusion, rather than anger at being called the same...its not a common term.

I think you've done what you could to educate the ignorant Texas masses about the derogatory nature of the term "Okie." I, for one, have never, ever heard that it was anything other than a name used to identify Oklahomans...but I haven't read "The Grapes of Wrath." Now that I know it is the handbook to understanding all things Oklahoma, I will definitely put it on my list of things to read. You know, sometimes the meanings of terms change over time...often for the better when people forget the original significance. You said yourself, many from your state are not even aware of the original meaning. For instance, I remember, once I called my dad a dork. I thought he was going to kill me. Turns out, "dork" meant something entirely different in his day...once we figured out the misunderstanding, we laughed & moved on (and now I call him a geek). From now on, if I have the urge to refer to someone from the other side of the Red River, it will be "Oklahoman" and not "Okie." Point taken.

One thing you said really did bother me though:
Quote:
it's the self righteous war mongering conservatives that ARE uneducated from Texas that bother me.
Are you saying there is no equivalent in your state? Seriously? I am shocked and amazed to learn that Oklahoma is not a conservative state, and that there are no "war mongers" within its borders. Why not just leave Texas out of the statement? Who does like war mongers? Oh, and not all conservatives are war mongers....

Oh well...you know, I'm totally proud to be a native Texan. I love the history--factual and legend. Like it or not, the state has a mystique...it can get absurd, but I love it just the same, and would rather lose a limb than move anywhere else. As others have said, I'm sorry you don't have a home that you love. That is a shame.

So, I think now would be a great time to get back to our original discussion...that being "I Like Texas...."?

p.s. If you don't like Texas, go start your "I Like Oklahoma" thread...there may actually be one out there already....

That is pretty much why the TX/OU game is held at the Cotton Bowl. All those Sooners are from Dallas anyway.

Actually it's because it's half way between both cities...

And Norman is a city... Third largest in the state... (Sad, but true!)

And only 26% of the student population is from Texas, but that's cool, because they know the better school...

hmmm,

either that, or the majority of that 26% was on standby at t.u. and A&M.

And half of your damn football team is from Texas, in my opinion, they should lose their Texan citizenship when they go play north of the Red River.

Norman's a suburb of OK City.

Kitso left to SD, another friend is thinking of going out to Country Capital's state, and I'm thinking of going to DC. At the bar tonight, kept thinking how when I go to DC, I won't be able to just go to the country bar and dance my little heart like I always do at Dick's or Cowboy's or Gruene or anywhere else.

I LOVE TEXAS!

Hey,

There's actually a "Texans in DC" type group. You should look that up... I wish I could think of the name. My mom was showing me stuff like that when I thought about moving up there. It's just a group of Texans that get together and do random things... In the summertime they have a big bbq and what not.... There are a tonnnnnnnn of Texans up there, so you won't feel too far away from home. Plus the founders of Texas were from Virginia. That's why there are a lot of Texans at VA schools...

Oh, for all you OU people... There are a lot of people crossing the border because the major Texas universitites have grown to freakisly large sizes. This over-growth isn't limited to JUST oh might OU (sarcasm) ... The amount of Texans at LSU (geaux tigers!) has shot up in recent years....

If you don't like Texas, go else where...

New Yorkers are more friendly than Oklahomans... I swear... I've never met more rude people than at the Sugar Bowl... It's called MANNERS! PASS THEM ON!

Got back from seeing Cory Morrow this weekend. You have to love the Square at San Marcos. I was cool seeing my brother Django Walker playing a few song with Cory.

Well, I'm goin' to Carolina,
Takin' that hard rough road.
I'm gonna circle the River of Jordan
Cause I just wanna see where it flows.

21 days on the road,
Wonderin' where we're gonna go from here.
21 days on the road,
Well, I'd go home but my home's right here. -

I'm wakin' up on the sidewalk
Next to some place I've never seen.
Well, I hope that people come to see us
And I hpoe they fall in love with me.

21 days on the road,
Wonderin' where we're gonna go from here.
21 days on the road,
Well, I'd go home but my home's right here. -

There's lightning up on the horizon.
The Lord is speakin' loud and clear tonight.
And I'm thinkin' bout a girl in Selma...
She wants me back in Texas by tonight.

21 days on the road,
Wonderin' where we're gonna go from here.
21 days on the road,
Well, I'd go home but my home's right here.
