I think people didn't want to be in the pledge house because it meant they would be on film. It wasn't the house itself they didn't like, just the MTV participation.

As far as Melissa - sure, we shouldn't judge her from one diary entry (which is at least straight from her and not edited up by MTV!), but then again, it seems a little hypocritical for her to complain in one graf about how MTV is distorting her and making her look bad and then in the next assume MTV's portrayal of Sigma is accurate!

Re: setting the record straight

JoyfulMuse, here is what Sigma Insider said about the Jessica situation:

In addition, all of the girls had a place to stay for the quarter. Coincidentally, the few girls in question were the first to agree to stay in the pledge house. They could only get 5 girls to do it at first. Jessica agreed after the first move-in and she became the 6th member of the "MTV pledge house".

I finally got to see the show... didn't catch it Monday night. For the most part, I was positively impressed... I'm glad the sisters made a point of trying to select women who embodied their ideals, since some women did seem to have turned up for rush just to be on camera. I'm also glad/relieved that MTV didn't do as much of a slice 'n dice as I was expecting.

The sisters asking the rushees directly if they were Jewish rubbed me the wrong way, though... I guess it's one way of trying to find out who's sincerely interested in joining and who's just there for camera time, but I'd be very put off if someone started asking about my religion.

I thought the show was ok except for all the complaining about the pledge house rules. I don't know if it is like this just at my school but the rules seemed pretty similar to the rules in each of the sorority chapter houses here at Butler! Here we're not allowed to have alcohol in the house, and guys can't be in the house after a certain time. We allow guys in our rooms, but we also have cold dorms and they have to be out of those areas by an earlier time than the common areas.

It seems as if the Sigmas didn't prepare their PNMs for the rules, or maybe the PNMs didn't ask the right questions. I know I wondered about that stuff going through rush!

Another gripe I have is that they should have mentioned that SAEPi was a LOCAL sorority! I just hope that people realize that NPC rush is a lot more structured and there are a lot more rules involved in the process. I know Pi Phi nationals would have never let us get away with pledge bracelets when we weren't even allowed to sleep over at the house during initiation week unless we already lived there!

I'm pretty sure the reason they were asking if they were Jewish or not is b/c they are a Jewish interest sorority...at least that's what I gathered.

I believe Jessica is hispanic. I just know. LOL Now, whether she is Mexican-American, Cuban, Puerto Rican, I do not know, but I can pretty much positively say that she is Hispanic.

First episode was just on again. I was watching for the "creative editing" and indeed if you watch the house rules meeting they are wearing the same clothing and hairstyles from moving in. I am guessing it happened the night they moved in. I believe that the rules were most likely laid down the evening they moved in then.

And on a personal note, I like Jordan. It is Candace that rubs me wrong. But we do have to remember that NM's are often a little out of hand in the beginning, at least until they learn what their org. really means to them and the other sisters. I know I was a bit nuts in the beginning.

Hey there
Yes Jessica definately said she is Mexican American.
I agree with the previous poster, they need to settle down(the pledges) but I know that it usually takes a few days for the pledges to realize it's not a big party, and they are pledges and have certain rules, and must show respect for the sisters.
Also, I too was confussed about the whole judging girls bc they are pretty. I know speaking for my sorority, we want pretty girls. And I know people are saying well they don't want superfical etc, but is that not being superficial, saying someone is just bc they are pretty? I was confused about that.
Oh and I WANT our rushees to get "gushied" up for rush. It shows it is important to them.
Does anyone know if SAEpi participates in formal rush? Bc their rush seemed like COB, We have informal rush like they do in fall but also formal in spring.
Also, does anyone know if they are going to set out to start new Sigma chapters? I think that would be cool, seeing how a lot of people knowwho they are now?
Well good luck girls, and get those pledges in line.

Their formal rush is in the fall (note the show takes place in the spring). They are an associate member of Panhellenic. Also, they have helped to start another sigma chapter in San Diego already, at San Diego State. I hope that answers your questions, deltajas

I think the house rules meeting was on move-in day (that evening), so that would explain why they were wearing the same clothes.

The "Are you Jewish?" question most likely did arise out of Sigma AEPi being a Jewish-interest sorority - but they could have been more subtle. There's a difference between "you must be Jewish to join our sorority" and "you don't have to be Jewish, but we espouse Jewish ideals, we have Shabbat dinners, we don't have mandatory events on Jewish holidays, etc. and we ask that you be ok with that." From the show, and particularly from the fact that some of the women they invited to join were not Jewish, it looks like Sigma AEPi is in the latter category... but just asking the question "Are you Jewish?" does imply that the answer had better be yes.

Don't know if anyone touched on this yet (haven't finished reading), but in actuality Davis is a LARGE school, with about 23,000 undergrads.

I had to laugh at that one . Thanks for the article DeltAlum!

I'd like to address some points in a general manner.
Point 1:

To the people that are emphasizing the difference between national's and locals.

The way Sigma's rushed is probably more the rule than not the rule in regards to many campuses.

One thing that you are overlooking is that many of you are coming from really large chapters in large greek systems. Often its not your national keeping you in line. Its the competition between sororities. And the fact that many Panhells and IFCs have broken a cardinal rule: Never let your unbrella group become an enforcement arm of the administration. I have talked to girls from large southern sororities and they have told me that if they do something wrong another sorority chapter is likely to turn them into panhell.

At schools with much smaller greek systems, there are more similarities with the way the Sigmas rushed, even among National groups. Maybe not during formal recruitment but certainly during informal. At many schools, formal Rush is a complete joke, based on defferred Rush, and most of the girls go into it having been asked to show up by a sorority.

Point 2: In regards to MTV creating a bad image for sororities.

have to make stuff up here. All they have to do is portray the natural tensions in a chapter and a group of new pledges.

That should be more than enough to create a good show. You already see the tension. I definitely was not real fond of the assistant rush chair as she was portrayed.

i just got to see the show for the first time this afternoon.....i guess i'm still processing.

it was good to see older sisters (leslie, the vp) stand up for what they believe in.

however, like many of you, i was really not pleased to see sisters discuss pnms while they were within earshot! also, the part where they showed their selection process had me cringing. i know how tense things could get at my chapter when we had mss, and it really made the sisters look catty and small minded. i can't imagine what it must be like for those new members to have to watch the show on tv and hear what their new sisters said about them during the recruitment process!

overall, the show wasn't too horrible, but given that it's mtv, i think it's only a matter of time before it slides into stereotype and drama....
