Question Technical Legacy Question...

If my uncle is a member of XXX fraternity (along with other distant relatives), am I technically a legacy of this organization?

Thanks

You would need to check with fraternity XXX. An uncle would probably make you a legacy.

It depends on the organization. Some will only consider children, grand children, great grand children and step children to be legacies. Nieces/nephews and cousins sometimes don't make the cut depending on the organization.

It would also depend on what being a "legacy" to an organization means for that organization.

I mean, once legacy is established, the official policy might be an "Oh, that's nice" with no further special consideration.

or at least the local, unofficial policy

Although just mention that you have a few relatives in XXX, your uncle or whatever, if they talk about it or ask you why you chose to check out fraternity XXX, just say something like "well my uncle was a brother here in the '70's (or whenever) and made it sound cool so I thought I'd see what it's about" type of casual bringing up of the subject at hand and all should be well and good.

Good luck with rush.

Nieces are not legacies in Gamma Phi, so why would nephews be "probable" legacies in a fraternity? Are fraternities generally more broad with their definition of legacy?

yeah, I was told (so I assume it's true) that I was/am a legacy to a different fraternity than the one I joined because of my uncle's membership. Although, that was the same chapter. So if it's another chapter, it might not matter at all.

The fraternities with which I am most familiar include nephews. I know that some fraternities do not count uncle/nephew relationship as legacy. Hence my use of the word "probably" - and also why I said that the best course of action is to check with fraternity XXX.

during my rush i talked with one fraternity that i am a legacy to through my 2 uncles and cousin. I asked if it meant anything with that chapter. They said that its not a basis on whether you get a bid, but it shows that you come from a family with similiar values to that of the fraternity.

Our policy is that we request that each chapter to at least invite the guy to rush. It's really just a foot in the door. After that you're on your own.

Thanks a lot guys! BTW, I am already and have been apart of XXX for about a year (not Chi Chi Chi, I just don't want to reveal too much you know..) and found out AFTER I joined that I was an uncle-nephew legacy.
I'll try and post here more often.
