Hi,

I'm not in a sorority (yet). In fact, i am currently attending a CCC hoping to transfer to a university next year (UCLA to be specific).

The thing is, I live right by the UCLA campus...which means I live extremely close to the sorority houses. I've always dreamt of being in a sorority and am definitely rushing if I do get accepted into UCLA.

I don't know how else to put it...walking by campus every day and seeing the row of sorority houses makes me even more excited to get into UCLA and rush. But it will be a very long time before that happens...you have no idea how badly I want to be a part of greek life in some way.

So my question is...is there anything I can do to get more involved with UCLA (particularly the greek system) ? As early as now I'd really love to learn more about the sorority chapters at UCLA and what they have to offer. Would it be possible to attend Greek Week as a non-UCLA student? Or is there anyway to get to know the people at the sororities at UCLA? Gosh, I know how weird it sounds, but I've had my heart set at joining a sorority at UCLA for the longest time and would like to get an early start.

Any suggestions would be so great...thanks =)

The best thing you can do is concentrate on getting good grades, and being as active in your college as you can. Community colleges have student organizations and honour societies, and you should be active there. If you are close to the houses, and run across members as a part of your day-to-day life, becoming friends with them MIGHT prove to be an advantage - but not if you come across as a sorority stalker. Work on becoming the best YOU you can, and recruitment will be easier. Also, follow the stickied notes on getting recommendations. You can line those up, and they will help.

If you have any friends in chapters at UCLA, it might be ok to go to a Greek Week event or two, but it would be weird to just show up not being with anyone.

trust me, you will be doing more harm than good by trying to get involved in greek life prior to getting into UCLA.

HOWEVER, if you do want to get involved the correct way, try figuring out who you can get letter of recommendations for. As much as people here on GC say they are not necessary at UCLA, you should. Recruitment this year was like 700 people. Heaven knows how competitive it will be in a year of 2. So ask around- family friends, recentily graduating friends. DO NOT ask people you do not know. Make sure you recomendation senders know that you will not need them untill the august before you go to ucla.

Next, you can volunteer for some of the organizations philantropy's. I am not garenteeing that you will meet any of the ucla sorority women while you are volunteering, but it will be a great conversation topic to talk about when you DO go through recruitment (who wouldnt be impressed that a pnm participated in their national philantrophy).

UCLA is a very prestigious school. good luck and I hope you get in. make sure you number 1 priority is GETTING IN!

I think you should concentrate on getting in to UCLA first. That is a big enough challenge. Good luck.
