Who cares about Robert's Rules...

In the past we've had a problem running our meetings. Now I am looking for a shortened and condensed version of Robert's Rules online. Please help.

Get involved in student organizations that use parliamentary procedure if you want to learn it. My time in the leadership of the Student Senate really helped me get my parliamentary procedure down.

Robert's rule is the most efficient way to run a meeting. Order the condensed version of Robert's Rule or join a student org that uses a parlimentary procedure. I am still learning and I've been using it for 1 1/2 years.

There are folks out there that do Robert's Rules workshops for a fairly low amount of money. If you're anywhere near Oklahoma, I know a guy that'll do it for a reasonable rate.

Actually I'm in Michigan. I recently found out that our school has an official parlimentarian (registered and everything) and she did a workshop for our student government. She also is willing to do workshops with other student orgs.


To anyone who is interested in parlimentary procedures, find out if your school has an official parlimentarian.

There is a Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief book that I'm familiar with. And, even better, Robert's Rules for Dummies. (No, I'm not kidding.)

I find the people who have a working knowledge of Roberts' Rules to be the same people who are the leaders of any given organization. And usually, the most respected.

If you get a chance to use them regularly, do so! You'll use them for the rest of your life!

Thanks for bringing this up! I know all of the rules very well having been in Student Council in high school and my 1st 2yrs of college, and I've been meaning to find a list for my chapter b/c boy do meetings run long when we don't follow the rules!

I'd stop by your student organization office (or whomever is in charge of organizations) or your Greek Life office. They might have something that they can give you. In our office we have little pamplets (made by the same company that makes those "Don't do drug" ones with the weird people on it) in different topics, like "How to run a Successful Meeting" and a very condenced simplified Parlamentary Procedure. We also have stupid videos that people can borrow about it to.

Kind of lays out everything to follow even most in todays GLOs have no clue about it!

Ex: I want to make a motion!

Talk out of turn and bring things up that are not for the moment!

It is called an Agenda and makes thing so simple when followed!

There are 2 national organizations for those interesting in parliamentary procedure: NAP (National Association of Parliamentarians) and AIP (American Institue of Parliamentarians). Both have local chapters, and there may be one near your school. Most members of either group would be happy to have you get involved with their clubs and help you in learning parliamentary procedure. Also check to see if they would be willing to do a workshop with your school (I'm a member of a local NAP club, and we've done this several times).

The In Brief book is great, but is not intended as a replacement for the full Roberts Rules of Order, Newly Revised (RONR). In Brief is intended as a way to quickly learn parliamentary procedure. (there are also the Dummies, Complete Idiots, and Everything books on Roberts/Parly Pro).

Also, both NAP and AIP have bookstores with LOTS of materials, much created by these groups and only available from them.
