Looking for the FSU Noles out there
Can any of you tell me how the lifestyle (what it is like) these days in Tallahassee? I have not been there in years and I am wondering if it is a nice city to relocate a family at this time.
Any knowledge of the public school system/private schools?
Also, do many graduates stay in the area after they finish their degrees or do they move on out? Do people truly enjoy the area?
Any info you can share is appreciated - both positive and negative.

The first time I saw this thread, I was hoping you were going to have some good news about the upcoming football season. Then I read it, and realized that I couldn't really help you since I haven't lived there in almost 20 years. You might want to PM PenguinTrax - she didn't go to school at FSU but I think she lives in Tally now. I think all the other Noles on this board are either still in school or long gone from the area. Sorry!

I personally don't think I could spend my adult life here. The traffic is horrible, crime is relatively high, and it's just a stressful place to be. Of course, I came here from the slow paced, laid back town of Panama City, so I could be biased. There are a few nice parks to take children to, but unless you live on the outskirts of town, I don't think it's a very nice place to raise a family. But of course, to each his own. That's just my opinion.

Thank you for your response. It seems as though this is what the majority of people I have come in contact with say about Tallahassee.

My husband's extended family lives in Tallahassee, and they all love their town. Having been in the area for decades gives a different perspective than a newcomer, though ...

baci, one of the best ways to learn about some place is to visit there.meet the locals, ask them about the schools, the safety, the good neighborhoods. then visit the schools and the neighborhoods.
as to traffic, i think the traffic is better in tallahassee than it is on panama city beach, but as in most decent sized cities, it's not perfect, especially on football game days. if you know backroads (i do), you can often circumvent the traffic snarls.
i did not respond before because as angelove said, i have not lived in tally for years and years. my parents live near there, so i make several trips there a year. i hear that crime is high, but i have no personal knowledge. i feel safe when i am there, but i keep to the more mainstream areas of town. if i go to the mall, i am aware of my surroundings when i walk from and to my car-in other words, i use common sense and act no differently than i do here in naples.
you should be able to get school information online-percentage of students who go to college, average sat/act scores, # of students per teacher, etc. you should also be able to get the names of the schools in tallahassee online too.
maclay school(private/college prep) has a good academic reputation. it is on the northside of town. i had several friends who attended tallahassee christian school when i was at fsu. they seemed well prepared for college. this is not to say that the public high schools are deficient-i just do not know enough about them to offer an opinion.

I just moved away from Tallahassee after graduating recently. I think the area around the university is completely different from the northern part of the city. I would check into the areas to the north of capital circle. There is a country club up there, nice houses...an area completely different than the areas around FSU, FAMU, and the southern part of the city.
