From SUNY Cortland:
Jenni Schaefer to Deliver Feb. 20 Keynote Lecture for Eating Disorders Awareness Week Feb. 25-28 on Campus
Released: 2/11/2008

Jenni Schaefer, a national speaker, author, singer and songwriter, will share her struggle with anorexia and bulimia on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at SUNY Cortland. She is the keynote speaker for Eating Disorders Awareness Week at the College, which runs from Monday, Feb. 25-28.
Titled "Life Without ED: How One Woman Declared Independence From Her Eating Disorder," the presentation will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Corey Union Function Room. Sponsored by the Health Education Office and the Student Development Center as part of the "Wellness Wednesday Series" at SUNY Cortland, this and the other events of the week are free and open to the public.
Schaefer's presentation will use poetry and humor, from intimate thoughts in her personal journals about her eating disorder to the ultimate freedom she experiences today. A book signing, performance of songs by Schafer, open mic and coffeehouse will follow her talk.
"Be Comfortable in Your Genes," the theme for this year's Eating Disorders Awareness Week, will begin with a candlelight vigil sponsored by Delta Phi Epsilon on Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Corey Union Function Room. Guest speaking at the vigil will be Mary Ellen Clause, founder and executive director of Ophelia's Place in Liverpool, N.Y. Ophelia's Place is a non-profit organization committed to empowering those impacted by eating disorders by providing resources through education, outreach, advocacy and support services.

Delta Phi Epsilon will also be selling carnations from Monday, Feb. 25 through Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Corey Union Function Lounge and Old Main. The sales will benefit Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD).
Throughout the week, exhibits, posters and artwork will be on display in Corey Union Exhibition Lounge from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Donations of gently worn jeans and other clothing will be accepted during these times for the YWCA's Aid to Victims of Violence.
As part of the "Wellness Wednesday Series," Billie Jean Goff, senior counselor in the SUNY Cortland Counseling Center, will discuss "Alphabet Soup: The ABCs of Eating Disorders" at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, in Corey Union Exhibition Lounge.
Living in Nashville, Tenn., Schaefer is a consultant and spokesperson for the Center for Change in Orem, Utah. She received her bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Texas A&M University. Her 2004 book, Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too, garnered national attention. That led to an opportunity to be a contributing author to Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul (2005) and Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul: Daily Inspirations (2006).
The American Biographical Institute named Schaefer the 2007 Woman of the Year. In 2005, she was featured on FINDINGbalance.com and profiled by nationally acclaimed author Jessica Weiner.
Schaefer has appeared on radio and national television programs, including "Dr. Phil" and "Entertainment Tonight." Her work has been in published in the Chicago Tribune, Cosmopolitan, The Washington Times, The Washington Post, Woman's World, CosmoGIRL! and Publisher's Weekly.
