UW student dies after fall from fraternity window (Alpha Sigma Phi)

UW student dies after fall from fraternity window

In his biography on his fraternity's Web site, Kevin MacDonald wrote: "You can sum up my life with three categories: sports, music, friends/family."

Those were only some of the traits of the 21-year-old University of Washington junior that others recalled Sunday, a day after he died after falling from a third-floor window of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity house.

Wow, that is sad. I know we are all adults, but there needs to be some precautions by the housing association.

When I was in school, the Beta house was across the street. At the time they had a flat roof on the 3-story house. It took one of the members to fall off the roof before the housing association finally put a pitch on the roof.

Playing with students' lives is not a joke. Just like when you have a child, you baby-proof your house. Well, when you have a fraternity, you need to go about it the same way. Maybe windows that opened only half-way could have helped? I don't know, but it seems like something that could have been avoided.

That is so tragic.

Benzgirl, I agree that there should be some consideration given to the fact that college kids sometimes do stupid things, and maybe "child-proofing" is in order.

The dorm at UT, where my son lived last year, has had two instances where kids have fallen off balconies. Two years ago, an SAE lost his life, last year, a kid suffered multiple broken bones, and was lucky to not have died. I find it pretty crazy that the company that owns this private dorm has not put up something, like bars or chain link, to prevent these types of occurances.

I know that it would detract from the appearance, and that there should be some type of personal responsibility expected from these college kids, but when you have two instances, in two years, of kids falling off balconies, maybe strides should be taken.

I would think their insurance company would insist upon it. But, I don't know the liability issues of these accidents, so I don't know for sure if they were, or will be in the case of another tragedy, held responsible.
