Nebraska Recruitment
Hi, I've been lurking here for a while, but this is my first post.
I am planning on attending University of Nebraska (Lincoln) in Fall 2009 and have been thinking quite a bit about joining a sorority.
I've searched all of Greek Chat, but haven't found any specific information about UNL Recruitment. Such as: How competative is it? Are recomendations absolutely essential or just a plus?
Any other information you have would be greatly appreciated!

I believe Nebraska still has a "bed rush", which means each chapter is allowed to take as many women as there are available beds in their chapter house (and presumably the new members move right in after bid day). I would think this would make for a very competitive recruitment, since the number of available spots is fixed and not tailored to the number that register. I would get recs. Are you a junior in high school? If so, you could broach the subject with your teachers and other women from church, work, sponsors of your sports teams or other clubs to see if you can find any Greeks. Keep them in mind (and write them down) next year when you are getting recs together.

Calling NUBlue&Blue!!
She might be able to tell you the scoop. I know that there are some beautiful houses, and more than a few early, single letter chapters, but she might know the curent information about recruitment. Good luck and have fun! Big XII has some great greek systems.

Actually there are a couple of threads on UNL recruitment on GC...one from as recently as last year I believe.
It is competitve for the housed chapters. There is one chapter that is unhoused at the current time. Start working on recs. If you are in Omaha, get in touch with your teachers and the Omaha Alumnae Panhellenic. There are many Greek women teaching in Omaha schools. I was surprised to find out years into my membership that my Jr High English teacher was also my sister!

Thanks so much for all of your help so far.
Violet, I know that you are not allowed to live in the sorority house until your sophomore year. But I appreciate your efforts in trying to help.
Also, I don't think they use a traditional quota system, how does that work? Is there a maximun number of PNM's the sorority can invite to join after recruitment?

This is a very basic explanation:
At UNL, a sorority may take only as many women during recruitment as they have room in their chapter house for. For example, Sorority A has 30 open beds/spaces in their chapter house, so they can take 30 girls. Sorority B may only have 25 spaces, so they will only take that many girls.

futuregreek? - You are correct in that almost all freshman sorority members will live in the dorms. However, as both violetpretty and KSUViolet06 noted, quota is based on the number of beds that will be available the following year. So generally speaking, the quota (number) for the chapter's freshman/pledge class mirrors the number of the chapter's current live-in seniors. And for what it is worth, Lincoln girls are not counted toward the quota number.
