Question re-pledging help

Ok so i saw another thread for this, but i didn't feel like her situation was the same...

i depledged before MY sorority's initiation and had to leave at the end of fall 07... and now i'm transferring to another school where i would LOVE to re-pledge that sorority... but my sisters at my old school said that nationals would not let me re-pledge.

i'm really confused because my sisters were not completely sure, and those who wrote on the other thread seemed so sure that you could re-pledge at another school as long as you weren't initiated previously...

so would all sororities allow re-pledging at another institution, or do you think that some actually WOULDN'T allow it...?

You misunderstood the other thread. Rushing and pledging are different.

You can participate in recruitment and accept a bid in another sorority as long as you have not been initiated. Your pledgeship in XYZ sorority on Campus A does not carry over to Campus B.

ok well i know that rushing and pledging are different... in the other thread they said they pledged but dropped a couple weeks before initiation... and i just didn't know if my sisters were correct in saying that nationals for the sorority wouldn't allow me to re-pledge at my other school, or if those in the thread were correct in saying that i COULD re-pledge (if extended a bid)

YOU CAN RUSH AGAIN AT YOUR NEW CAMPUS.

YOUR "SISTERS" (technically they're not, since you're not an initiated member) ARE CORRECT.

You'll have to participate in recruitment at your new campus, but you're not guaranteed a bid to that sorority even though you were previously a New Member at another campus.

Do you understand?

While you're at it, please provide a link to that other thread since you're questioning the advice of the GCers. Thanks.

I don't have a Green Book, but I know several GCers have Unanimous Agreements memorized.

The term "re-pledge" -- that only applies to the same campus for one calendar year, am I correct?

ok well to clarify i said "sisters" because thats just shorter than saying "potential sisters" or something else

and i know i'll have to re-rush, and that a bid isn't guaranteed just because i was a pledge at another school, and that that sorority might not be a fit for me at the new school

but i just really wanted some input from others, and i appreciate yall responding. =]

thanks

ps- i don't even KNOW where i could find that link anymore... i saw it a few hours ago and then got busy, and then got back on here after closing the window out... sorry

This was many, many years ago but I do know of a pledge in one chapter of my sorority who was not initiated ( she transfered closer to home the 2nd semester of her Freshman year. This was when girls pledged in the Fall but were not initiated until March) As a Sophomore she went through rush again at her new school. There were no guarantees but she did pledge KD again and was initiated. In fact, now that I think about it, I remember another girl that did this as well.

Panhellenic may have changed the rules or my sorority may have changed their policy but I do know it has happened in the past.

Yes, if you come back to the campus where you were offered an invitation to membership you can be approved to continue your new member period and then intiate. If you leave campus you will need to go through recruitment again. However, I would contact your regional or national office and ask them specifically the policy for that sorority. I find that many collegiate chapters are not as fully versed in national policy as they should be (ahem).

Come to think of it, I know of several cases of that occurring. I don't think they went into recruitment with the aim of repledging the first sorority but it happened.

Well i actually went to the national website for the sorority, and sent an e-mail and got a response that i was still an active new member which confuses me since i know that i signed the form to de-pledge. i'm not sure why the form was never sent or why my status stayed as an active new member, but if i AM an active nm, i'm not sure what to put on the recruitment form for the new school because they will ask when i de-pledged... i suppose i'll put the date i de-pledged...

but thanks to all of you

Your pledgeship is only good at your old school. Keep in mind that even though paperwork is sent in, it usually takes a while for that change in membership status to happen. When I served on EC, NMs who dropped out still showed up on our rosters from IHQ even a year later.

To the GCers -- would you even have to indicate that you rushed and pledged a sorority on the new school's recruitment form? Correct me if I'm wrong, but if it asks about previous pledgeship wouldn't that apply just to the girls who are re-rushing again on that campus?

To the OP, best of luck with rush.

The important part is that you signed the form, that you were NOT initiated and that you transferred. Put the date you signed the form. If the Panhellenic at your new school for some reason, says that you're ineligble (doubtful), then call the chapter you began pledging at your old school to fax/scan/mail the depledging form you signed.

A bid is binding for a calendar year unless you transfer, which you did. So, even without signing the form, I would think you would be fine.
I'd recommend calling the Greek Life Office at your new school to sort this out sooner rather than later just to make sure so you don't have to worry about it.

As a depledged transfer, you are as free as any PNM going through. The sorority you began pledging does not have to offer you a bid (but you might end up there if you are a good fit at your new school too), nor are you bound to them. Good luck with recruitment at your new school and keep us posted!

I know at my school we did ask if you had pledged somewhere else and where. I think it was to avoid women who had initiated by being able to check and verify whether or not initiation took place.

But as far as I understand from NPC rules, when switching schools pre-initiation (as everyone has already said) you're pledgeship doesn't come with you. It is broken and you may continue with another group.

I dont know if this is still an issue.. but hopefully everything worked out!

Anyways, if this is still a problem.. my advice would be talk to the first chapter you almost started to pledge for, and then tell the chapter you wanna pledge for now your situation and what had happened. Then just take it from there..
