Tri-Sigma installed, members initiated

The Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority initiated 61 women during the weekend and received their official charter for the university on Saturday.
"We are one of the largest colonies in Sigma Sigma Sigma history to be initiated and installed," colony President Desiree Paulhamus said.
A team of 13 national officers and 15 collegiate members from three different chapters: Southern Arkansas University, the University of Arkansas at Monticello and the Alpha Iota chapter from Talequah, Okla., attended the ceremonies.
The initiation was in Thompson Hall. Twenty-eight women were initiated Friday and 33 women were initiated Saturday.
A parent reception was held in Carmichael Hall on Saturday in the chapter's renovated suite, which has new paint, flooring and furniture.
The reception was followed by the installation of the chapter, where the sorority received their charter.
A $1,000 check for Torreyson Library was presented to Dean of Students Gary Roberts on behalf of the sorority.
The sorority has been in what Paulhamus called a new-member period since March 2007. The national organization gave them a year to recruit about 75 members.
The sorority is returning to campus this year after losing its charter two and a half years ago.
In January 2007 the national organization of Sigma Sigma Sigma determined there was no interest in reviving the sorority on campus.
Sophomores Lyndsey Ingram and Casey Jo Burnett, juniors Leigh Ann Mallet and Ashlea West and senior Ashley Taylor recruited 50 possible members within two weeks and asked the organization to reconsider.
Burnett said: "To me, this is an amazing experience. The whole sorority went from five to 70 [women]. It's amazing to see what people can do with a common goal.
"I will always be able to say I was a charter member."
Along with the initiation and installation, the executive officers of the sorority were chosen. They are as follows: sophomore Melissa Swint, chapter president; Burnett, vice president; junior Melissa Halverson, treasurer; junior Mia Gordon, secretary; Ingram, recruitment director; junior Jamie Mose, education director; and sophomore Emily Hester, Panhellenic representative.
Paulhamus said the hard work paid off.
"The women of the sorority were really excited because we've worked to reach our goal for over a year. Especially in a leadership position, you realize how hard it is to start something new, rather than just join something that's already started.
"The satisfaction all 61 women felt was a sense of relief that our hard work and dedication lead to that moment."
Senior Brooke Logan said the sorority's achievements were fulfilled.
"We got to reinvent ourselves ... from the sorority that was before us," Logan said.
