out of the loop about rush
I'm about to be going to LSU in the fall and I plan to go through rush. I have wanted to join a sorority for a long time. I have friends that were in sororities and they give a little bit of advice, but other than that I have no clue as to what to expect during rush and I'm extremely nervous, what to wear, how things generally work during recruitment week. I've heard a lot of different things about greek life at LSU and i know that it is an extremely competitive sorority school. Is there anyone on here from LSU that could help?
If anyone could possibly fill me in on some of this that would be great.

The General Advice thread is a good place to start. Check out the other stickied threads in the Sorority Recruitment sub forum.

thanks, that thread did answer a lot of my questions. I also wanna know, and I'm asking very honestly because i really don't know, but is it a safe assumption that when a girl goes through rush that most of them will get a bid. i mean, is it really all that common that girls who are genuine and present themselves properly don't get offered any bids? Once again, i realize that LSU is super competitive so i'm nervous about this.

With a school like LSU (and really ANY school), recruitment isn't a guaranteed process and there are girls who don't receive bids. The number of girls who get them generally exceeds the number of girls who don't.
No one can say for sure whether you'll receive a bid or not, but it is worth a try. Recommendations are very important at LSU and I'd start now with getting those together. Some chapters will cut a girl immediately if she does not have a recomendation.

Yes, recs are very important there, and that's not a secret:
LSU's Greek Affairs web site says ". . . it is highly recommended to secure recommendations/references for the sororities.
How many recs do I need? A minimum of one recommendation is asked for each sorority, two for Chi Omega Sorority."
Check out, read and heed the LSU Greek Affairs and Panhellenic information
http://appl003.lsu.edu/slas/greekaffairs2.nsf/$Content/+PHC+Sorority+Recruitment?OpenDocument
Also, notice that the web site mentions this:
"Will I receive anything in the mail about Recruitment at LSU? The Greek Tiger, LSU’s Recruitment Book, will be sent to all incoming freshman on May 1st. It includes pictures of what to wear, how the structure of the week will go, chapter information, and advice on how to best prepare for recruitment. If you haven’t received it by June 15th, email your name and address to us at . . . and we will send you one. Once you have registered, you’ll receive Girl Talk, a more in depth guide to sorority recruitment.
I’m a sophomore going through Recruitment. Will I receive a Greek Tiger? No, but if you email us your name and address at . . . we will be more than happy to send you one. " (e-mail addresses edited out -- they're on the actual web site, though)
So, lsucajun8, you should be getting considerably more official information covering the topics you mentioned in your original post.

Good advice given above. I would also recommend attending one of the area information sessions. There is a list on the LSU web site. You will be able to meet chapter members and alumnae as well as gain information bit more information about the process. The first one is on April 5.
Good luck and GEAUX TIGERS!

I don't know if you have to get recs from all ten sororities... it might be better if you do some research on a couple that you might like to join (of course, each night of recruitment you'll change your mind on which one!).
Recs are important on a large campus like LSU as opposed to my school which is smaller and only like 2% of the student population is Greek... the organizations want to make sure they have quality girls and it's easier to find that with help from recommendations.
But even if you don't have recs, just look your best, be yourself, and enjoy the experience of Formal Recruitment. The groups are bound to notice and will want you despite a rec. Show them what good things you can offer their organization because that's ultimately what we look for in potential new members (you!).
And it definitely helps that LSU will send you all that info!
Good luck! (I'm sad there isn't an AOII chapter at LSU...)

Reading is fundamental. Please see KSUViolet's post regarding LSU recruitment, specifically the part that says securing a rec to each of the sororities is recommended.
It's okay to be encouraging to the PNM, but it also helps to be realistic.

amenser,
i would hate for a pnm to decide before meeting each of the chapters which ones she wanted to concentrate on, because when she meets them in person they might not live up to her expectations and other chapters may become her favorites. how sad if she had thought that she would hit it off with only 3, so secured recs. for only those three, and then she doesn't click with them, or they don't ask her back. better to maximize her chances and secure recs. to all chapters on her campus, thus giving herself the best chance to have a positive recruitment outcome.

Ignore all the info in the above post. You need a rec for every chapter at LSU. Water is wet. The sky is blue. Kentucky Fried Chicken is fattening. PERIOD.

Recs for all houses are a MUST!
Start asking around - church, school, work, etc to see if any of the adult women you know are in sororities or know someone in a sorority that can write you a rec. (This info is posted elsewhere in more detail) Recs will need to be in some time this summer.
Good luck and keep us posted this fall!
