Question Rush Applications

This is a question for sororities...do you send out rush applications to incoming freshman. I would like our school to do it but if it doesn't work I don't really want to bother. I just wanted to know if they work, if there is a big response, and what kind of turn out do you usually have for rush.

Thanks

My school has about 15,000 students. Our Greek Affairs elects a rush book staff. They put together a booklet about all the sororities and fraternities along with a few pics from each group. They also include info about them (how much dues are, any interesting info, what types of socials they have, philanthropy, minimum GPA, etc). They send them to all incoming freshman. IN them there is an application for rush for both panhellenic and IFC. We usually have 300 women rush each year. That's just an estimate though. It fluctuates.

This is just an idea. You might try creating a chapter webpage if you havent already. Supplement it with a Rush Database Form. My Nationals does that. Something simple to get the word out and maybe get some more prospects.

Cool

we do have a webpage...check it out
www.geocities.com/alpha_theta_chi

Either we just have a problem with publicity in general...or nobody wants to join a greek organization.

As to whether it will work, that really depends on the manner in which it is presented when the school sends out packets to the freshmen. If it's done nicely, it might help...if it's something that the school just tacks on the back of the student activities brochure, it will look like crap and probably be ineffective. Remember if there is any anti-Greek sentiment on the part of the administration, leaving the final signoff in their hands could be disastrous.

Try contacting the Greek Affairs office of a big Greek school like LSU or U of Illinois and see how they do this and what sort of costs there are. (that would be relative to the # of orgs and the school of course)

About what percentage of students stay on campus on the weekends? If you are at a "suitcase campus" it is going to be hard to get students involved. They have to stay there a weekend or 2 to get involved....and if they aren't involved they won't stay a weekend...the endless circle. If this is a problem the WHOLE campus has to deal with it. It makes me mad when schools see this happening and don't care as long as they are getting their tuition money.

A rush database form on your site is definitely a good idea. There are women who won't go to a rush party but would feel more comfortable filling out a form online. It helps get things started.

Nice website. I like the Intro. Still, my only suggestion would be an online interest database form. Maybe just another tool.

We would be able to send the packets out separately from a student activities brochure so we would get to design and distribute it.

That is another problem...we don't have student housing, so nobody stays on campus on the weekends. We are a commuter college.
Everybody lives at home with mommy and daddy unless they have a job and can afford otherwise.

I gave the idea about a rush database to our webpage designer. I think that he is going to try it out and see how it works.

Ok...since only a couple of people really answered my questions here they are again.

Do you send out rush applications to incoming freshman. I just wanted to know if they work, if there is a big response, and what kind of turn out do you usually have for rush.

Thanks for the other ideas, I'm sure they will really help us out!!

Have a great day!!
