2 more college murders?

The student body president at the University of North Carolina was killed by a shot from a handgun to her right temple, according to a police report released Friday.

Authorities also said that 22-year-old Eve Marie Carson's keys and wallet have not been found. Police don't have any suspects in her death, and still believe it was a random act of violence.

"We've been getting a number of leads that we're trying to follow up on," Police Chief Brian Curran said at a news conference Friday.

The initial police report offers the first details about how the senior from Athens, Ga., may have died. Her body was found lying in a city street before dawn Wednesday, shot several times. Her vehicle was found Thursday about a mile away.

When police began investigating, they believed her car was stolen, the report said. Police would not say Friday if they still believe that is the case, but said the killer had access to her car.

Carson was last seen alive at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, when she stayed home to do schoolwork while her roommates went out, authorities said. But they aren't clear why she was out at 5 a.m., when a report of shots fired was called in to police.

Curran said there was no sign of a break-in at her home or any evidence she was having trouble in a relationship that might have led to a conflict.

"As far as I know, she wasn't having any problems with anybody," Curran said.

Curran said police had been in contact with authorities in Alabama investigating the killing of a female student at Auburn University, but added that the cases do not appear to be connected.

Carson was a prestigious Morehead-Cain scholar and a North Carolina Fellow, taking part in a four-year leadership development program for undergraduates. A premed student, she majored in political science and biology, taught science at a Chapel Hill elementary school, studied abroad in Cuba and spent summers volunteering in Ecuador, Egypt and Ghana as part of a school program.

University Chancellor James Moeser has said there is nothing to link Carson's slaying to anyone on campus, where the news of her death has led to a widespread outpouring of grief.

"It's just a huge blow. It's a blow against everything we assume about ourselves, about being a peaceful, safe place where kids come," Moeser said Friday. "She was a joyful person. She loved this place. She loved being here."

and in Auburn

Auburn Police are looking for the person who shot and killed a student, then set her car on fire.
Police were called to the scene of an injured female on North College Street just after 9:00 Tuesday night. When officers arrived, they found Lauren Burk. The 18-year-old freshman from Marietta, Georgia had been shot. Burk was transported to East Alabama Medical Center, where she later died.
Less than half an hour after police found Burk, someone reported seeing a car on fire in the parking lot of Hinton Field. Police say the 2001 Black Honda Civic is registered to Burk.

The case is under investigation by Auburn Police, the Department of Forensic Sciences, the Lee County Sheriff's Office, and the Lee County District Attorney's Office.
In a letter to students, the University is urging students to be careful both when on campus and out in the community.

So sad. This is someone who had given so much of her life and it was taken away much too early. I read a comment on the UNC website that said, "I don't want Hillary to become President because I planned to see Eva as the first woman President"

I feel so badly for their families

I have heard that the two murders are connected. Apparently the female from Auburn and the female from UNC-Chapel Hill were both prominent figures in their respective student bodies and when they were young, they lived less than 5 miles apart from one another in Georgia.

IDK though, at any rate, this is an extremely upsetting situation and I'm keeping the families in my prayers.

Oh my goodness. That is so scary. A shot to the temple must have been very close by. I can only imagine the horror and anguish she must have felt.

Hopefully they will catch the culprits soon.

And of course, my prayers and sympathies go to the families and friends of the victims.

I hope the two are related, if only because apparently they have a suspect.

This is so sad to hear.

And I thought it was very classy of Dook to have a moment of silence before the game in honor of Eve.

I heard that Lauren Burke is a Delta Gamma. I checked a news search, and confirmed it (see the last paragraph of linked article).

My thoughts are with both of these girls' friends and families.

The two cases are not believed to be related, nor did they live that close to each other: Burk was from Marietta, GA (on the NW side of Atlanta) and Carson was from Athens, GA (about an hour east of Atlanta). Burk was indeed a member of Delta Gamma. They have arrested a suspect in Burk's murder, while they have surveillance footage of a man using Carson's ATM card but no arrests have been made. Please, let's not feed into rumors.

Unfortunately, the Phelps bunch (Westboro "Baptist Church") are protesting the funerals. I sincerely hate these people, and that is fairly rare, even for me.

Campuses are only as safe as the police and law abiding citizens on and around that campus try to make it. There will always be students and nonstudents who want to victimize others.

But did these incidents occur on campus or around campus? Campuses are not immune to what's going on around it.

It sounds that both occurred off campus (about 5 miles from AU, a little less for UNC). I think much of the shock value, however, is that both of the immediate areas, Chapel Hill and Auburn, are to my knowledge, pretty safe places. I'm sure things get a little sketchier farther out, but even in Opelika I don't think most AU students have much fear.

Of course, both areas have some poorer, more rural surroundings, and although not especially violent to my knowledge, random violent crime does occasionally occur. unfortunately, these two seemingly random incidents occurred in succession, which certainly doesn't mend the already-present fears of many college students.

True. Thanks.
