letters on campus

I had an interesting conversation with a member of Alpha SIgma Alpha yesterday about some "regulation" that the greek community at the univerdity f texas at san antonio is trying to pass... apparently they want to ban any person from wearing greek letters on campus unless the org is recognized by the university... is this normal on other campuses??? i found it to be offensive to be honest. at my last school there were many greeks from other schools who wore their letters, as i feel they should if they want to, it's who they are. why the hating??? am i wrong for feeling this way?????

Pardon the crash, but I'm curious about this. How exactly would they regulate that? Tell someone to take his/her shirt off? Membership is on the national level, so the school shouldn't have any authority to ban someone from wearing paraphernalia. Do you happen to have a link to the proposal?

Wouldn't this be covered under freedom of speech or expression? If this is a public university, there's no legal way they can ban people from wearing anything.

I think that's exactly who it's for. We had the same thing at our school with an underground group.

Then again, if you are in an "underground" chapter, by definition you should be smart enough to not wear letters all over the place as that kind of kills the secretive factor.

I can't imagine them saying "KKG, you have no chapter on this campus, I rebuke thee."

i dont have a link to the proposal... the girl i spoke with, i met on the shuttle on our way to campus...i approached her because she was an alpha sigma alpha, being one of the farmville four, i thought it'd be interesting to talk to her... we talked about zta being on campus in fall of 09... i was also wearing an old rush shirt, that may have been why she brought it up... i was absolutely shocked! i know greek life isnt big at utsa, but why hate??

I don't see how the Greek Council, or Panhellenic, can pass a proposal that would impact any but their members. If your group is not on campus, you are an alum, and therefore not under their jurisdiction. It's ridiculous.
