Surprise....surprise.. A-Rod's wife files for divorce

MIAMI (AP)—Alex Rodriguez’s wife filed for divorce Monday, calling her husband an adulterer who “emotionally abandoned his wife and children.”

“The marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken because of the husband’s extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct,” according to Cynthia Rodriguez’s petition for dissolution of marriage, filed in the family division of Miami-Dade County Circuit Court.

The New York Yankees third baseman, who earned his 12th All-Star selection Sunday, has refused to comment on his relationship with Madonna, who denied any romantic involvement with the slugger in a statement posted Sunday on people.com.

“The petitioner has exhausted every effort to salvage the marriage of the parties,” Cynthia Rodriguez said in the filing. “However, Alex has emotionally abandoned his wife and children and has left her with no choice but to divorce him.”

Rodriguez’s attorney in Miami, Ira M. Elegant, said he had not reviewed the divorce petition but added: “As you know, anyone can pay the filing fee and make allegations.”

I've known A-Rod was a piece-o-work since his college days. I remember when the Mariners drafted him that he was a jerk even in the negotiations - hello, you're a kid. They should've left him in Miami.

There's a pre-nup, so I'm not sure how much she'll get out of it.

I didn't hear A-Rod was a jerk in negotiations - actually, from what I've heard, he's a pretty nice guy (although a bit sensitive to criticism, etc.). The Mariners made a good deal of money off A-Rod, though, so that all worked out for everyone.

Actually, A-Rod might have left money on the table while negotiating with Seattle after the 1993 draft - he wound up with a major-league contract for about $1.3 million, which is exactly what #2 overall Darren Dreifort received as a signing bonus, plus another $1MM bonus. That's almost exactly the percentile difference, on average, between picks 1 and 2, historically. Considering he's the best-rated prospect to ever get drafted, he really didn't pull some of the shenanigans that others (Josh Beckett and Jason Varitek in the past; Rick Porcello more recently) in similar spots have turned.

Beside this, there's the fact that Scott Boras did all of the negotiating, but yeah.

I'm pretty sure Cynthia Rodriguez will wind up in a better position for having married A-Rod - after all, life's just so brutal when you have to run to Lenny Kravitz's Paris apartment to get away from your husband's lavish NYC condo - so it's all crocodile tears at this point. Without knowing the details of the relationship, and while recognizing that the spouses of professional athletes are generally in bizarre situations to start that often don't play by the same rules of what I would expect from a relationship, it's hard to say any more - the prenup would be interesting, but I'm sure it'll settle before any of that mess reaches court.

I'm afraid I lump pro athletes with politicians ... one who doesn't cheat is the rare exception.

Oh, I agree the Mariners got their money's worth with Alex, but I recall him coming across as quite the spoiled brat during negotiations - I was pretty young then, but I remember the general "tone" of the media coverage.

Regarding the pre-nup, they've been married long enough now that certain terms of the pre-nup are probably no longer valid, plus it was him that cheated, not her, which probably changes some things.
