GRRR...
sorry guys to totally rant, BUT i just cannot help it! everywhere i go, we greeks are seen as "bad" and just "people who party and buy their friends" GERRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
These ppl who say these kind of things obviously do not know how much Greekdom means to all of us and how much my sisterhood with Theta has changed my life!!! My sisters are there for me 24/7 and i suspect they will always be even if i turn insane for some reason! They have been through everything w/me--I can honestly say that if I hadn't gone Greek, I wouldn't be as happy as I am today. I would have never found these group of girls that I can honestly call my family away from home.
I was on some Survivor Messageboards and those supposed-amber fans (who's an AGD) stopped adoring her JUST BECAUSE she is a sorority gal. Allow me to post some tidbits (hopefully i won't get in trouble or anything):
(I'll leave out the screenames)
XYZ said:
From her bio on the CBS site:
quote:
She's a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, where she was Vice President and New Member Coordinator.
Call me unfairly biased, but as soon as I saw that one line, I knew I was not going to be a big fan of the Beav.
Now that I reflect on it a bit more, I find it kind of funny how she was vice-president...not quite the top (female) dog, but up there with the elite just the same. She seems to fit into that role pretty well thus far in the Outback, too.
("Babysitter for her professor?" No comment. Okay, I'm done being catty now.)
UGHH!!! XYZ's comment is so typical--ignorant of what we Greeks stand for!!
here's another:
ABC: Most sorority girls I know wouldn't eat an M&M that fell on the ground, much less a big-ass insect.
BCD: It's probably unfair to judge her after only limited appearances in two episodes, but this is Mighty Big TV! It's her background that bugs me, since it includes:
- High school cheerleader
- Sorority member, as January pointed out
- Public Relations major in college
- Living with her parents after graduation
- Working as an administrative assistant (secretary) while looking for her "career job"
- Favorite hobbies are "going out with her friends, dancing and just generally having fun"
She may be the most attractive female contestant, but her background betrays a certain lack of seriousness. I hate women who are like that, and I certainly wouldn't want her as a role model for my daughter.
Her background is why I think she'll be weak and go with the "in" crowd, i.e., Jerri's Kids.
AHHHHHH!!!!!! THese make me PISSED off so bad. Just because she is a sorority girl, she gets all this s*** piled up on her?? There have been other Survivors who have listed "just love hanging out" as their hobbies, and they have not been baited on as Amber has!! And come on, the typical 21 year-old doesn't know what he/she is gonna do with his/her life--that is almost to be expected sometimes.
Sorry just had to get this out!!!! I have friends from HS who just go "oh migod samantha, you went GREEK?? so...i suppose you have a lot of friends...how much did that cost ya?"
Guess I know who are my true friends now....my Greek sisters--who are priceless!

If it makes you feel any better, there are some of us who aren't in a social soror that think you guys are pretty cool!
I'll admit that I've known some pretty hateful greeks, but I've known plenty more who are just awesome girls that I'm proud to have as friends. I'm in a service org and I'm very active, I've been an officer five times. I've also worked about thirty hours a week all through college, so I felt timewise I couldn't commit to a social sorority too. (Although I would have loved to have done it all!) But my sisters that I have are the best friends that I've had in school! I know how important they've been to me, enough so that I want to bring our org to other campuses so that other girls can exerience the same thing.
My point is, while I believe there are some greeks that I would never be friends with, there a lot of non-greeks that I would never be friends with too. I respect anyone who has found a group that they feel a part of and are happy because of it. I think that the people who are so anti-greek are the ones who never had that feeling of being a part of something that was so much bigger than they are, and something that is a powerful, wonderful force in their lives.

sammie - were you on survivorsucks.com? Some of the posters on there are real a-holes as far as Greeks are concerned - all you have to do is say sorority or fraternity and they automatically make assumptions. Ironic how people who make those kind of assumptions are the people who accuse Greeks of doing the same thing.

I think a bunch of us highly educated greeks should go post a bunch of wonderfully thought out posts on survivorsucks.com (without revealing our greek identities). Later when we make friends with those who hate greeks, we'll reveal our Greek identities...baffling those who though Greeks couldn't do anything but skip class and party! HA HA HA HA HA!
Speaking of how unfair it is to judge people based on association...
I had some guy totally hit on me and then when I told him I was in a sorority he started to dog on the fact that I "paid for my friends."
I had read a wonderful quote that I used as a combat and he seemed pretty impressed. So if someone tells you you pay for your friends, simply tell them this:
"If I paid for my friends, surely I did not pay enough."
YEAH!

As for buying my friends, I make a joke out of it and tell people that they were having a sale on them.
As for the comment about "She may be the most attractive female contestant, but her background betrays a certain lack of seriousness. I hate women who are like that, and I certainly wouldn't want her as a role model for my daughter."
What kind of parent would be tring to find role models for her children ON A REALITY BASED TV SHOW? What about a family member, or historical figure, but a TV CAST MEMBER??? UGH!!! And us greeks are the dumb shallow ones. YEAH, OK.

It's funny how people are putting Amber down for being a member of a sorority--yet according to E! and those other tabloid shows, she's the cast member who has the most fan sites out there...
I admit it, I often visit the www.survivorsucks.com website, but I stay away from the message boards. I've visited the message board on www.geocities.com/amberfans and even that site's beginning to look like the Followers board. I enjoy the survivorsucks.com site because of their "fantasy outback" game--similar to fantasy football and baseball, except you win no money.

OTW,
I'm with you on that. I think hanging out at Survivorsucks.com would be a great idea. This is not related but something kind of irritated me last night. You know that new "Man Show" on Comedy Central. Well there was a group of guys in the audience last night from Cal-State Chico. I guess there letters said Gamma Beta Rho. I dont know. Something like that. Anyways, one of their brothers asked a question and that host(formerly from loveline) said, "Chico isnt that place a prison at night" Something derogatory to that effect. I'm sure it was just a joke, but I thought he was kind of poking fun at greeks.

Oh, good good line, Hootie! I'll save this up to use on special occasions.
